Description
A VERY SPECIAL CHRISTMAS - RED 12" VINYL EP
STARTING BID: LOWEST SALE PRICE EVER RECORDED!!
SENT AS A CHRISTMAS GIFT TO AUSTRALIAN RADIO PROGRAMMERS IN 1988.
ESTIMATES ARE LESS THAN 30 OF THESE REMAIN IN THE WORLD WITH ONLY 11 REPORTED IN POSSESSION OF COLLECTORS BY DISCOGS.
Every year on commercial radio since then we've heard these songs produced by Jimmy Iovine from the likes of U2, Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi and John Mellencamp. Some would say we've heard them way too many times throughout the years, but these are the originals.
The front paper slip cover has a tearing issue. Rather than being cardboard like the LP, for such a tiny run they only made it in paper with the same design as the general public release. It's still not at all bad and you could mount the vinyl in a display frame with it indistinguishable from excellent. The front cover is exactly the same design as the regular vinyl edition and could be repaired.
The back cover which is the main difference between versions I'd class as between Very Good+ and Excellent.
Read the printed letter from the Managing Director of Festival Records at the time, Jim White, confirming this release was not for sale. He asked the music and program directors across the few dozen commercial music radio stations to please play some tracks from the full CD to support the album. They did, but naturally, virtually all of them used the digital copy.
I've had this in deep storage for well over 30 years now after I literally saved it from going into the dumpster.
A message was announced on the station intercom system ...
"we're having a massive clean out of all our vinyl - we don't want or need them anymore as we're only playing CDs from now on. Anything not taken by 5pm today is going into the dumpster!"
Virtually nobody in the entire building wanted any of them because everyone had CD collections by then and so I saved a whole armful of BRAND NEW unplayed 12" releases from being trashed.
I think that's what happened to most of these copies at radio stations around Australia - there were only about 70 commercial stations in the country at that stage and NONE were made for overseas by A&M in the US or Europe.
SO - this is a serious bit of vinyl history.
Last sale of one of these was exactly a year ago for around A$500 and in used/played condition. This one looks absolutely gorgeous and has never seen a stylus on it for the very reason above!!!
Best of luck - it would look INCREDIBLE mounted and should take pride of place in any music fan's collection.
