The Singles  The First Ten Years

VG++ to Near Mint

Atlantic 7 80036-1-G (1982)

(not released on CD in the U.S.)

RECORD 1: Sides 1 and 2 are visually Near Mint (NM), and HAVE BEEN PLAY-GRADED NM.  Virtually no surface noise, even between tracks.

RECORD 2: Side 3 is visually VG++ to NM with one visible scuff that can't be heard.  Side 3 has been play-graded VG++ to NM with the faintest of surface noise audible between a few of the tracks and on the fadeout of the last track.

RECORD 2: Side 4 is visually NM, and HAS BEEN PLAY-GRADED NM.

Double Album jacket is VG+ with faint ring wear and corner scuffing.  The spine is in great shape; completely readable.  The inside is VG++.  Both original inner paper sleeves are in great condition except for small separations at the bottoms where the record has pressed on the paper.  See photos.

I grade conservatively.  VISUALLY, if a record has 1 or 2 barely visible scuffs under good light, I grade it NM.  if it has more than 2 scuffs or 1 or 2 barely visible scratches, I visually grade it VG+ or VG+ to NM (Excellent).   If the surface has many light scuffs or light scratches, I visually grade it VG.   A less than NM outer sleeve will be described so you know what its defects are.

I listen to each record to see if there is surface noise.  A record with very infrequent and very soft surface noise, static, or a few mild clicks, that may be heard in the dead space ahead of the lead in track of a side, or in the dead space between songs, and only rarely during the songs, rates a NM.  If mild surface noise can be heard during the songs in a few places, especially during quiet or low volume parts of the songs, the record is rated a VG+.  If mild surface noise can be heard throughout the record, I rate it a VG.

A record can have a higher or lower play-grade than a visual grade.  Higher if the scuffs are superficial and the needle in the groove doesn't contact them so they can't be heard.  Lower if the record looks good but was played with a worn needle that damaged the inside of the grooves, which can be heard as surface noise.
