Label/Format: Parlophone original black and gold format with fairly matt lightly textured surfaces. Side two has the ‘ W T’ embossed tax codes with both letters immaculate.

Label Conditions: Both are in truly amazing, almost unbelievable condition – they are mint – not a word I would use lightly for any label, but these dating right back to 1960 for a mono record are simply as-issued. Not a single mark, spindle trace or blemish to be seen. A record that appears barely even played issued at a time when many were still using steel pins for stylus. Given the age and mode of this record and popularity of the singer during the 1960s, few examples of this most famed label will ever be found better.

Rarity: The album itself sold well and can certainly be found, but like the Beatles debut album, initially, and briefly available on the black and gold Parlophone label, condition is the paramount factor and this record will prove beyond difficult to find better. Now fast approaching 60-years-old, this record totally ignores the fact.

Brief Info: The debut Adam Faith album from 1960, he was one of the most popular pop singers of the decade and this long player sold well. He had a string of consecutive hit singles mainly from 1959 to 1965 and had his own distinctive style and presentation. He later went into acting and he starred as the main character Budgie in the popular television series in the 1970s. The original owner of this record clearly only played it once or twice at most – its condition totally blows away all the usual visual and playing issues for any record this great age, and will prove beyond difficult to match or find better. What a delight to see the famous black and gold labels in this sensational condition as well.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably better for one this age with a massive 185 gram record inside best part of six decades. A single format made with thick robust card (prone to chipping), the front laminated and cover all folds. It ends on three rear flipbacks, the main back panel is matt and fairly smooth. The letterpress manufactured type actually feels slighly in relief (recessed) when touched by the fingertip. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with ‘Patents pending’ text. This includes its original heavy-duty thicker paper polylined inner sleeve that promotes the use the ‘Emitex’ cleaning cloth and ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text.

Lamination & Front: A superb looking front, but not quite perfect with a little mild chipping of the surface on the bottom right edge towards the bottom and corner tip. The odd small chip on the bottom edge fold as well, but as mild as they usually get. There is barely anything else to fault on the front with the laminate retaining excellent shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting, minimal hint of dulling and barely creased. The portrait of the young Adam Faith looks magnificent with rich deep colour that remains totally unaged.

Cover Back: Only mild discolouration of the card and any grubbiness gentle and light to politely remind of age. Other than that, the matt unprotected panel has nothing else to fault. All three flipbacks are solid, neat and clean without the usual ugly grime formation on their ends.

Top Edge: Straight, smooth and practically unworn.

Bottom Edge: Again straight with just two or three reasonably small surface chips near the left corner, little else. For a storage edge with a considerable weight record inside, this has actually fared well.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Any thickening reasonably mild, these early 1960s covers tended to use thicker card compared with later ones. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression, the surface smooth and clear. The text is unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, centred a fraction low in manufacture.

Corners: Any tip rubs mostly small and light, more moderate on the bottom right, being the leading storage corner, that is rarely avoided. Hardly any creasing. Very fine and most with nearer excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this early 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(–): and incredibly with all edges naturally intact. A quite heavy top-quality inner with two pristine window circles, the semi-transparent type polylining intact and very neat. The paper with minimal discolouration and barely even creased. It is more than obvious, the record has been removed or inserted.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–): arguably better. An amazing visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed on robust top-quality vinyl. A copy appearing hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces very few, ultra light, wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light – hardly anything really. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. How many records like this will survive like this? – very few I would suggest, especially the more popular ones in mono. Visually a super example that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality debut album plays up to and most even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies, especially in mono, will outperform this very early first -1N/-1N pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on a standard sterey system. I am certain this record has barely been played and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record – just hold and viewing those classic black and gold labels that look new is a pleasure in itself. A record that will prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
