Description
A NEAR MINT COPY OF THIS ULTRA RARE UGANDAN 78 ON THE ULTRA RARE AFRICA VOICE LABEL issued by the AFRICAN GRAMOPHONE STORES LTD
G. ADOLPH BANYORA
TUSAIDIE MASKINI (TWIST)
b/w USIAMINI UWONGO
BOTH SUNG IN SWAHILI
AFRICAN GRAMOPHONE STORES Ltd were based in Kampala and issued records from the late 50's and into the 70's.
This is the only Issue on 78 on their "AFRICA VOICE" label I have ever come across!! And I can find no other reference to it so they must be exceedingly rare !!
Wolfgang Bender mentions that there are 11 discs from African Gramophone Stores in the Gramophone Library of the Sierre Leone Broadcasting Service but this 78 does not appear to fit in with the discs he mentions
"AFRICAN GRAMOPHONE STORES
From the black and white label with AGS letters two numbers. 223 and 848, then with letters ROCK from 43 to 77 in all 9 discs. From the black and yellow label 'Twist' TT only no. 34. It is all East African music."
I believe this 78 was actually pressed in 1962/3 and it is manufactured from a very hard vinyl rather than shellac.
I don't have much information about the artist, but a track by Adolph Banyora and African Beat Jazz - "Niko Pekee" can be found on the 1993 album "Before Benga Vol 2: The Nairobi Sound"
