The West African Series Volumes 1 & 2 : a rare sampling of the popular, progressive and folk music of West Africa, centered mainly around the musically rich and creatively volatile republic of the Ivory Coast. Once a French colony, the small nation has become the musical focal point of West Africa, attracting musicians from across the continent. Culled from the extensive singles catalogue of the Societe Ivoirienne du Disque (SID) based in the Ivory Coast capital, Abidjan, the two volumess highlight some extraordibay music and immense talents working in a variety of styles and approaches.

The Volume 1, features the talents of Francis Kingsley, Greg Shelton, Charles Atangana and others, with songs ranging in influence from jazz styles (Wes Montgomery, Miles Davis, Gil Evans, Coltrane) to rock (Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa) to the songwriting skills of rock's poets (Bob Dylan, Tom Waits) to soul and funk (James Brown, Stevie Wonder). While all these influences are acknowledged by the artists and evident in their music, the unique blending of stylles and inspiration result in songs that not only stand on their own but in many cases explore totally new territories. The arrangements, inncently basic but solidly alive, are augmented by imaginative, exeptionally innovative musicianship. While the "afro progressive" music does not have in roots in the West African folk culture per se, after having heard folklore in the first fifteen years of their lives, most were influenced by it one way or another. Each track of this record has its own individual identity, its own inspiration and source. A very unique sound !

At any rate, SID has done a phenomenal job : betwen 1975 and 1976 the company has released over 40 singles and has been responsible - trough the recording opportunities they offered - for the drawing together of some of West Africa's greatest musical artists.
