Description
In my description for the other After Tea album I have up for bid ("National Disaster"), I mentioned that this particular Dutch pop band seemed to really have an affinity toward the British popsike scene. And I compared them to the (later) Spencer Davis Group. Now, with the arrival of this album, it all makes sense. Turns out England was glad to adopt them after all, or at least give them a proper British pressing, as this album came out in the UK in 1968 on the Ace of Clubs label. It's basically the entire "National Disaster" album with the addition of 2 bonus tracks. But what tracks they are! First of all, their statement of purpose, "After Tea", which is a cover of the late Spencer Davis Group song (see? I was right!), and secondly, a tremendous slice of Rubble popsike whimsy called "Lemon Coloured Honey Tree", which sounds just like you'd hope it would - shades of Idle Race, early Move, etc. I also dig the phased-out toytown popsike of "The Time is Nigh", with its chorus of singing children, the pounding freakbeat dancefloor shaker "It's Too Late", and the Yellow Submarine Beatlish singalong "In the Land of the Bubble Gum Tree", with its distorted megaphone vocals and classic popsike title. The liner notes are also quick to point out that After Tea hails from the Hague, "what is sometimes called Holland's Liverpool." So if you get the feeling that After Tea might've been groomed to be the Dutch Fab Four, you're right. Original 1968 UK pressing on the Ace of Clubs label.
