Full gloss vinyl is extremely clean with a very few faint, short hairlines that are 100% inaudible. SIDE ONE also has a light non-feelable surface scuff at beginning of side that makes a few, just barely audible, faintest tics; otherwise LP plays NM throughout. Labels are pristine both sides.

Still in the complete original Shrink Wrap; snapping bright and overall extremely clean, but a few very faint age spots at opening edge. No creases, wear, writing or soil. Slightly bumped corners. No splits.

RARE only Vinyl Pressing of this Incredible Canterbury session - the last for ALAN GOWEN

ALAN GOWAN was the leader of GILGAMESH and the co-founder of NATIONAL HEALTH with Dave Stewart, but his aggressive Leukemia kept him from the full involvement there that he should otherwise have had. He died in 1981, leaving us far too soon, but leaving us with (too few) amazing musical wonders.

BEFORE A WORD IS SAID was recorded at Alan Gowen's flat in South London just weeks before his untimely death in 1981, this album is a fine piece of work from the founding Gilgamesh and National Health keyboards player and composer and is a real treat for Canterbury fans. On these recordings he was accompanied by PHIL MILLER, RICHARD SINCLAIR and drummer TREVOR TOMKINS.

National Health fans will love Gowen for all the music he wrote, and especially for his gorgeous minimoog playing. BEFORE A WORD IS SAID proves that, even in the last days of his life, Gowen's musical gift was undiminished. As always, his splendid solos sound like nobody else's.

BEFORE A WORD IS SAID will also be of interest to admirers of Richard Sinclair, who plays some marvelous fretless bass on "Nowadays a Silhouette" and "Umbrellas". And Phil Miller fans won't be disappointed, since Phil does some superb (very Hatfield-like) things on "Fourfold" and "A Fleeting glance" that includes what must be one of Phil's best ever solos. Aa few of the tracks have a slight 'DEMO' feel that is to be expected under the circumstances, since re-recording or any later dubs were out of the question.

How lucky we are to have this final statement from the genius of Alan Gowen! In fact, it's down right eerie, the playing is still brightly and brilliantly executed, and the writing is hauntingly beautiful.

who was a DJ at the Radio Station I co-founded in the 1970's - and who worked for me at my California record store in the '70s and '80s.
Sadly he has now finally left this mortal coil, bequeathing me his deep Vinyl Mine.

I do NOT EVER want to exclude all bidders from any particular country, even though a few specific countries are responsible for almost all spurious "not received" or "not as described" claims over the years. This evolves... for instance in France, buyers from Ile de France area seem, more and more, to be very prone to make a false claim. Italy has long Customs hold times. In NONE of those cases is it my fault and I will not lose out because of other countries' problems beyond my control.
