THE LOST SESSION -

The set was recorded at Wolfman Jack's home studio in L.A. in just one day August 20, 1971 and features a line up that was to become part of Mayall's Jazz-Fusion ideas in the 1970s.

This LP is very different. Albert plays with no effects, feedback or sustain. It's just plain straight ahead Blues. He also sings in mostly guitar keys instead of his usual Jazz keys. Mayall contributes all of the song's frameworks and King wrote the lyrics- mostly from his other songs and his expansive knowledge of old blues lyrics from Johnson, Brown, Robert Nighthawk, Elmore James, and many more!

This album was discovered in the Stax vaults when their tape collections were handed over to Fantasy Records in the 1980s. It was never released because it didn't sound like Stax, or the Blues at the time. There are many great tunes on this collection, but "Sun Gone Down-takes 1 & 2" have to be at the top. A great slow blues- one of King's best. "Brand New Razor" is my second favourite tune. It really jumps! "Money Lovin Woman" showcases King's famous talking blues ability. In fact the whole set is really great, different and interesting.

LIVE WIRE/BLUES POWER -

Recorded at San Francisco's legendary Fillmore Auditorium in June 1968 during Albert King's first engagement there as a headliner, Live Wire/Blues Power ranks with B.B. King's Live at the Regal of four years earlier as one of the greatest and most influential live blues albums of all time. Performing six tunes, only two of which he'd recorded previously, the six-foot-four-inch blues titan was able to stretch out beyond the three-to-four minutes allowed on 45-RPM discs and finally capture on vinyl the way he played in person. The results were nothing short of incendiary. As critic Albert Goldman commented at the time: "Instead of bending or warping a note here and there for special effect, King skirls every kiss-off note, sending vicious waves along his strings like the ripples on a cobra's back."

ALBERT KING & STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN - IN SESSION -

In Session, recorded in 1983, is the only known recording of Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan performing together. Its long-overdue commercial release (the album didn't come out until 1999) stands as a fitting tribute to the genius of two of the greatest musicians ever to have played the blues on electric guitar. Now, it's available on vinyl for the first time.

Anyone who's witnessed a much-anticipated jam session only to be disappointed - with each participant deferring to the other, the end result being that neither ever got out of first gear — will welcome this pairing of two giants of blues guitar. Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan obviously shared a mutual admiration, but it simply wasn't in either one's makeup to a) be intimidated or b) take a backseat to anyone. Not without kicking up a little dust.

This is such a precious set to any fan of either of these blues giants. In addition to the free-spirited jams, there are priceless episodes of conversation between each song, both men exchanging accolades and King giving the much younger Vaughan (though tragically it was Vaughan who died first) some sage advice. This simply is a must-have.

The giant left-handed guitarist was no stranger to the recording studio by 1966, but Albert King had still to make his mark with the record-buying public. When he linked up with the cream of Stax's Memphis musicians, including Booker T. And The MGs and the Memphis Horns, that connection was made. "Laundromat Blues", "Oh, Pretty Woman" and "Crosscut Saw" set the scene for "Born Under A Bad Sign" and "The Hunter", which quickly found their way into the repertoires of Cream and Free. The convolutions of his guitar style were perfectly complemented by the trademark Stax funk rhythms. The team went on to make many more singles and albums, none of which could surpass the achievements of their first meeting.
