· ALBERT KING (with the entire BOOKER T. & THE MG’S) – BORN UNDER A BAD SIGN - ORIGINAL 1967 STAX RECORDS STEREO LP S-723
· ORIGINAL U.S. PRESSING
· ORIGINAL YELLOW STAX STEREO LABEL WITH BLACK PRINT AND “STACK OF RECORDS” LOGO, EARLY-TO-MID 60’s STYLE
· INCREDIBLY RARE "HYBRID" PRESSING OF THIS VERY RARE TITLE, WHICH USES ORIGINAL STAX LABEL AND ORIGINAL STAX CATALOG NUMBER ON THE LABEL, BUT COMBINES IT WITH ATLANTIC REISSUE COVER WITH A DIFFERENT CATALOG NUMBER; WHAT IS SO UNUSUAL ABOUT THIS COMBINATION IS THAT ATLANTIC WOULD NOT RELEASE THIS TITLE ON ITS OWN IMPRINT FOR ANOTHER 11 YEARS AFTER THE ORIGINAL STAX VERSION CAME OUT (ATLANTIC ONLY REISSUED THIS TITLE IN 1977, BY WHICH TIME ORIGINAL STAX LABEL WAS LONG OUT OF COMMISSION); APPARENTLY, ATLANTIC PLANNED TO REISSUE THIS TITLE ON ITS OWN LABEL CIRCA 1969 AND ALREADY ASSIGNED THE CATALOG NUMBER, BUT THEN SCRAPPED THE ALBUM ALTOGETHER AND ISSUED "KING OF BLUES GUITAR' ALBUM (ATLANTIC SD-8213) INSTEAD, WHICH HAS SOME - BUT NOT ALL - OF THE TRACKS FROM THE 'BORN UNDER THE BAD SIGN' ALBUM, COUPLED WITH A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT COVER ARTWORK. JUST IN CASE YOU ARE WONDERING IF SOMEONE MAY HAVE SWIPED THE ORIGINAL STAX COVER WITH THE ATLANTIC'S 1977 REISSUE COVER, HAVE NO FEAR: THIS COVER HAS A DISTINCT ATLANTIC'S 1960s LAYOUT AND CONSTRUCTION AND CANNOT BE CONFUSED FOR 1977 RELEASE.
· ANOTHER CURIOSITY: The record has a George Piros’ name or his initials (GP) clearly stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax): we have never seen a Stax mastering done by George Piros before. This is definitely a first.
· THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, AUTHENTIC, FIRST U.S. PRESSING; THIS IS NOT A REISSUE, AN IMPORT, OR A COUNTERFEIT PRESSING.
· ORIGINAL, THICK CARDBOARD COVER (AMERICAN STYLE)
· CLEAN, WEAR-FREE LABELS
· THICK, HEAVY VINYL PRESSING
(►PLEASE SEE THE IMAGE OF THE COVER, LABEL OR BOTH, SHOWN BELOW)

Here it is, folks: Albert King's FIRST Stax album – and undoubtedly the single greatest album of his career - the phenomenal 1967 "Born under the bad sign" album , which he recorded with Booker T. & the MG's (still one of the top-5 best blues recordings of all time, period!). If you have never heard this album before, you owe it to yourself to go check it out. We present to you the guitar player whom no less of a guitar genius as Jimi Hendrix cited as his idol (not to mention: covered the title track himself).
***
Born Under a Bad Sign was the first album Albert King recorded on Stax, and the title song became a blues standard. King played a Gibson Flying V through a solid-state Acoustic amplifier; his tone on the second song, "Crosscut Saw," was hailed in 2004 by Guitar Player magazine as one of the "50 Greatest Tones of All Time."
Eric Clapton closely imitated the solo of "Crosscut Saw" for Cream's song "Strange Brew" and the band covered the title song for their 1968 album Wheels of Fire. Led Zeppelin incorporated elements of "The Hunter" into "How Many More Times" from their self-titled debut album. The vocal melody from "As The Years Go Passing By" inspired Duane Allman's composition of the main riff from "Layla" from Derek and the Dominos' Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. Glenn Danzig covered "The Hunter" on Danzig.

If this is of any relevance (and we do not claim that it is) "BORN UNDER THE BAD SIGN” is an important entry in our top-10 list of personal favorite BLUES albums . Other entries- in no particular order- include Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Lonnie Johnson, Freddy King, Butterfield Blues Band, Elmore James, Lightnin’ Hopkins and Big Joe Turner.)

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD++ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) The record comes in the original (Atlantic, not Stax) stock inner sleeve.
(d) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· COVER
THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has a partially split top seam (between 4 and 6 inches / 10 to 15 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape
- Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 1 and 2 inches / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)
- Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on all three seams
- Back cover has a small peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker (less than 1 square inch in size)
- Cover has some ring wear. On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3 (front side) and 5 (back side).
- Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.
- Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging (nothing significant).
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine
- Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged / bent. (nothing significant)
- Cover has a visible wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the front panel
- The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on the front side
NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:
- No cut-out (drill) holes.
- No cut-out corners
- No saw-marks or indents
- No writing
- No stamps
- No stains
- No mold or mildew spots
- No stickers or labels
- No water damage
- No warping
- No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover
- No glue traces or wax residue.
- No bar codes
- No RIAA stamps or stickers.
