HE WAS, of course, the master performer of the era. A front man like no other and a lyricist of incredible perception. I saw SAHB a couple of times during their heyday and the show was mindblowing - a theatrical extravaganza with Alex assuming a number of personalities and guises all seemingly better and more outrageous than anything else on the scene.

This album showcased the continuing development of Alex and the band from the previous album ''. The writing and production had advanced considerably since their debut album primarilly due to the band incessent touring schedule and Alex's single minded work ethic. His eye was certainly on the big prise but not without compromise - for Alex it was all about art an dnot about money or 'pop' star glory.

Contains arguably the definitive SAHB track and one that has gone on to achieve special status amongst afficianados of the band, namely 'The Faith Healer' a track so big, bold and barking mad that it stills gives me goosebumps every time I hear that marvellou throbbing introduction. Also present and correct is the splendidly decadent title track, originally written incidently by Jacque Brel, a masterpiece in theatrical flamboyance with a sinister edge. Of course wew must make mention of 'Vambo Marble Eye', introducing a character that would re-appear in later songs. There is also time for flipped out mania with 'Gang Bang' and 'The Last Of The Teenage Idols' playing a role that would sound totally ill at ease with any other artist of the era but for the SAHB it fits like a glove.

Oh how we loved him. Alex was the leader of our gang. Vambo rooled my world and everytime I think of him, his passing seems that much harder to bare. If you have this album already then I salute you. If you don't then please take my advice and kit yourself out today. 

SAHB collectors will know that this one of the hardest albums to find in decent shape - the silver foil effect cover is nearly always worn and flaked. This one is about as good as it gets.

This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.

Pressing: Vertigo, UK, 1973

Vinyl: Superb clean condition. No spindle marks and virtually no other signs of use. Side one label is slightly 'bubbled' due to a couple of extra labels applied at the same time - see photo. Incredible audio quality. Grades as top MINT-!

Cover: Again, very little signs of use. Issued in a beautifully illustrated and embossed 'silver foil' effect cover. Extremely hard to find decent copies as the foil is prone to wear by even the lightest of handling. This one is in great shape - just a little storage wear. Sharp corners, one microscopic ding lower left, no bends, no ring wear, no split seams and no creases. Spine is beautifully stiff, straight and uncrushed with original pinches top and bottom. Beautiful and impossible to find like this 43 years after release. Grades as Ex+
