ALEXANDER SPENCE-OAR 1969 COLUMBIA RECORDS LP CS 9831 IN A STRONG VG+ CONDITION. NICE VINYL!! This auction is for Alexander ("Skip") Spence - Oar - Columbia CS 9831 ('69). This is a nice copy of the infamous Skip Spence solo record, OAR. Back cover states recorded December 16, 1968. By other accounts the record was recorded in one week. From Wikipedia: "described as "one of the most harrowing documents of pain and confusion ever made", the album was recorded after Spence had spent six months in Bellevue Hospital. Spence had been committed to Bellevue following a delusion-driven attempt to attack Moby Grape bandmates Don Stevenson and Jerry Miller with a fire axe, after having ingested LSD."
I wanted to start my description of this record with that back story( I took it from another seller's description, not a plagiarist) because it is that story that makes this the psych album of psych albums to own!! Skip Spence, basically lost it and much like one of his contemporaries(Syd Barrett) recorded the madness. Since I have a fair idea of what I believe this is worth to the collector I will describe in vivid detail what I feel is wrong with it, you decide if that will be a deal breaker, I know it plays fantastic and damn is it weird!!
The record is in an easy VG+ condition. On side one we have the following: a rub/scratch, 1 1/2" long, light and non-hampering to the play of the record. It looks worse than it is. On my stereo, went straight through with no issues. There is also a light hairline, again does not hamper play. Lastly the former owner, Diane, wrote her name next to Alexander in the inner label.
Side 2: basically immaculate, a very light hairline, plays like a top.
The cover has minor rubs on the top corners, spine is fine but the bottom edge there is issues. a 2" split by the mouth bottom corner and moderate wear in the left bottom corner. The sleeve pictured is not the original but I do have the original Columbia sleeve it came in, I will supply a picture of it if needed and it will be sent with the buyer of the auction.
