ALEXANDER SPENCE “Oar” 1969 Columbia 360 Loner Folk Psych Original MOBY GRAPE
1969/Canada/Columbia Records CS 9831….. here’s a rare original pressing of this legendary downer lp. The cover is in solid VG+ condition, there is a corner ding lower left corner and aging along the opening edge on the white back, otherwise the cover is solid and clean with no splits or delete. The record is in VG condition with lots of light scuffs/scratches/marks/hairlines. I played the record from start to finish. There are varying degrees if light to moderate crackle/ticks but no skips or other issues. There are also spots that play clean with little noise. The record has nice fidelity. When former Moby Grape guitarist/singer Alexander "Skip" Spence died it was another sad footnote in the unfruitful saga of one of rock's most multi-talented, but terminally inauspicious, bands. Spence's lone solo disc, "Oar," is a quickly recorded document of songs he penned during a 6-month stay at Bellevue Hospital. The dour tone of that time in Spence's life may explain the album's large amount of nondiscernible lyrics. He seems at times to purposely muffle them, making him a pioneer of unintelligible vocal chic long before R.E.M. And Spence's guitar—once unbridled during Moby Grape sessions—is understated, yet ethereal enough to echo the pained state of his soul. "Weighted Down (The Prison Song)" is a seemingly distant cousin of "Hey Joe," with Spence jealously asking a mate, "Whose socks were you darning, darling, while I've been gone so long?" Chronic heath issues kept Spence from being creatively active as a solo artist, but overall, "Oar" is a radiant endeavor.

MINT: as stated with no defects
NEAR MINT: as stated near Mint!, or Mint Minus, same thing, very clean with no defect to sound or visual appearance, one scuff or mark may be permitted but it will be mentioned in the description, a near Mint record looks and plays very clean
EXCELLENT: not much below near Mint, may have a delete hole and/or a minor defect or two not visually detracting from the cover, the vinyl will appear shiny and in clean condition with very minor defects not affecting the sound, still very clean and very collectable!
VG++ still a very nice copy with minimal cover wear and/or delete/splits, still visually appealing, the vinyl will retain it's original gloss and can have some minor scuffs/scratches that don't affect play very much
