Description
In 1971, Alice Cooper (the band) released two albums. First came 'Love It To Death', and gave the band the big hit "I'm Eighteen". The very first Alice Cooper album, called 'Pretties for You', was produced by Frank Zappa (along with three others, including Alice Cooper). Zappa pretty much discovered the band, and the first two records are psychedelic, strange, artsy, and experimental. You know, like Frank Zappa's music!
But in early March of '71, producer Bob Ezrin came onboard. Ezrin has produced some of the biggest names in rock through the years, such as Kiss, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Aerosmith, ascwell as Phish and Andrea Bocelli! Ezrin even plays keyboards on a few songs. He gave Alice Cooper a new sound, and radio friendly hit songs. "I'm Eighteen" is still a classic that everyone knows, and radio picked up on "Is It My Body" and "Ballad of Dwight Fry", as they are both great tracks. The cover came with controversy...The singer Alice has his thumb sticking out of his pants. Retailers and fans mistakenly thought it was actually "little Alice" peeking out. So that offending thumb got airbrushed (or cropped) out for subsequent releases!
In late November of '71, Alice Cooper (again, the band) released the album titled 'Killer'. The one with the snake! Alice was really cooking by this record, and it contains the hits "Under My Wheels" and "Be My Lover". The track "Halo of Flies" charted in Europe in '73, after the title track of 'Billion Dollar Babies' became popular. Bob Ezrin produced and played keyboards once again. They even have Rick Derringer playing additional guitar on two tracks! This one came with a fold out calendar under a pic of Alice himself.
Today we take a look at Alice Cooper, and the two albums that the band released in 1971. First up is a very cool and extremely collectible 12" picture disc of 'Love It To Death', with the uncensored cover! This is awesome, and comes with a backing card (that's also a discography). Japanese (and English) info on the card, but this was probably made in Europe. It's a thick and heavy 180 gram vinyl. There are a couple of very light surface marks on the record, but nothing bad at all. Only visible in a bright light, and when turned a certain way. I can't vouch for the sound quality, as I never play specialty vinyl such as pic discs or colored records. The A side is the original first press (uncensored) artwork, and the B side is the full pic from the original's back cover, (and not cropped). Card in great condition, with an Alice Cooper discography on the back!
'Killer' is a first press copy with the calendar. The vinyl itself looks really good, but with a few light surface marks on both sides. No heavy scratches, gouges, or scuffs. The jacket also looks good on the front and back, but with substantial wear on the spine and opening. A nice piece of rock and roll history, going back in time to 1971, when the Alice Cooper band ruled rock radio, and Alice himself was wearing a boa constrictor as a fashion accessory! The original band members have made several guest appearances with Alice (the solo artist) through the years. Guitarist Glen Buxton passed away in 1997. (RIP Glen. You were a fantastic guitar player and helped make Alice Cooper one of the most interesting and exciting rock bands ever. You are missed!)
Grab this double shot of vintage Alice Cooper collectibles today, but don't forget to feed the snake! (He doesn't eat much...)
"Told her that I came from Detroit City
And I played guitar in a long haired rock and roll band
She asked me why the singer's name was Alice
I said 'listen baby, you really wouldn't understand'!"
