Stunning edition of only 300 copies self-released private press LP from Damon McMahon aka Amen Dunes that feels like an ambitious step into the unknown: the album consist of stray tracks, woozy experiments in song-form, weirdo homemade Industrial psychedelia and the sound of pure Starsailor longing, with an atmosphere that comes over like early Richard Youngs re-worked for disintegrating tape by William Basinski. McMahon feels his way around simple, emotionally resonant guitar parts while snatches of almost-heard vocal float in the distance like Javanese gamelan and the warp and woof of tape F/X dissolve the whole deal into fuzzy interstellar shortwave. What sounds like a screwed and detuned Scorces playing downer blues at the bottom of the ocean morphs into the even more evacuated sounds of “Night Room”, with what might be a live jack triggering tiny explosions while a dark transparent drone hovers in the background and the occasional bereft vocal floats like clouds over the top, beautifully confusing primitive and avant garde strategies. “Watching Cartoons” is a solo for fuzz slide guitar cut-up with such muzzy depths that it feels like listening to a Jenks ‘Tex’ Carman on a wonky car stereo while being serenaded by Jandek and Pip Proud. The first side comes over as more abstract and experimental - think Deux Filles or Yatha Sidhra – while the second is more about classic loner/basement song styles. Indeed, if No Fans had ever signed anyone outside of Richard Youngs back in ‘the day’ Spoiler would have made the perfect label mate, with McMahon being to Buckley what Youngs is to Wyatt albeit transposed to major subterranean soundworlds.
A stunning album, hard to put your finger on the kind of nocturnal/weirdo atmosphere that it has but it’s the perfect late-night trip and a major contender for album of the year. Includes some tracks from the earlier Rat On A Grecian Urn cassette. Totally puzzling weirdo cover too. Very highly recommended!
