Das Jahr 1965 war ein Wendepunkt in der Karriere von John Coltrane. Der große Saxophonist, der mit seinem Spiel immer schon auf der Suche nach neuen Wegen war, überschritt in diesem Jahr die Grenze zur Atonalität, indem er (nach einer kurzen Einführung mit schnell hingeworfenen Themen) sehr freie Improvisationen spielte, die voller Leidenschaft und Raserei waren. Das vorliegende Studio-Album enthält zwei bekannte und oft gespielte Stücke (ein bewegendes "Chim Chim Cheree" und "Nature Boy") zusammen mit zwei kurz zuvor entstandenen Original-Coltrane-Stücken ("Brazilia" und "Song of Praise"). Art Davis spielt bei "Nature Boy" den zweiten Bass, aber abgesehen davon ist bei diesem Set - eine perfekte Einführung in Coltranes letzte Schaffensperiode - das klassische Quartett, bestehend aus dem Leader, dem Pianisten McCoy Tyner, dem Bassisten Jimmy Garrison und dem Schlagzeuger Elvin Jones am Werk.
The year 1965 was one of the turning points in the career of John Coltrane. The great saxophonist, whose playing was always very explorative and searching, crossed the line into atonality during that year, playing very free improvisations (after stating quick throwaway themes) that were full of passion and fury. This particular studio album has two standards (a stirring "Chim Chim Cheree" and "Nature Boy") along with two recent Coltrane originals ("Brazilia" and "Song Of Praise"). Art Davis plays the second bass on "Nature Boy" but otherwise this set (a perfect introduction for listeners to Coltrane's last period) features the classic Quartet comprised of the leader, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones.
