Accrington-born Jon Anderson's departure from Yes was still several years away when he made Olias Of Sunhillow, though this 1976 solo debut already feels detached from prevailing trends. Conceived as an elaborate sci-fi fable and performed almost entirely by Anderson himself, it follows a loose narrative involving warring tribes and interplanetary, mystical guides. We move from the gentle opening of 'Ocean Song' to 'Meeting (Garden Of Geda)/Sound Out The Galleon', where Anderson's invented languages and layered instrumentation stars to register, before 'Flight Of The Moorglade' lifts the record into oddball territory. Ambitious almost to the point of absurdity, yet strangely captivating throughout.
