This auction is for volumes 1('Ballads') and Volume 3('Songs') of Folkways Records historic Anthology of American Folk Music. Catalogue Numbers FP251 & FP253. Edited by Harry Smith. Each box contains 2 LP records so 4LP records in total. 1952/3.

The sets comes with a booklet which list contents of volumes 1 to 3. Unfortunately I do not have volume 2('Social Music').

Compiled by eccentric Harry Smith in the early 50s from his vast collection of folk 78s issued between 1927 to 1932 the set has had a lasting influence on American folk musicians. The current Mojo magazine(June 2004 issue) details its influence on Roger McGuinn, Bob Dylan and The White Stripes among others.

Record Condition

Records: VG+. Condition varies but is never less than very good and mostly better. Some sides are excellent with barely a tic. There is only one significant scratch which extends over one track but even that track plays without jumping or skipping. No skips or jumps on any of the four records. Exceptional for its age.

Labels: Excellent-blue labels as illustrated

Booklet: Excellent

Boxes: VG. Generally sound. Some wear and compression-small stain to box of volume three. Back board of volume 1 has a small split to top . Covers with track listings generally excellent.

I use the following definitions(roughly as per Record Collector)-

Excellent Record shows signs of being played but there will be very little lessening of sound quality. Surface noise will be light and only apparent, if at all, during quieter moments. There may be a few light tics but these will be few and far between. Sleeve may have slight wear and/or creasing.

Very Good & V Good(++ ) The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Level of surface noise and number of tics etc will be greater but the record will still be very listenable. There wll be no skips or jumps. Normal wear and tear on cover or extra items, without any major defects is acceptable.

P&P is £4.50 to UK, £6.00 Europe and £8.00 airmail to rest of the world. Surface mail costs are £4 to anywhere in the world(items can take up to 35 days to be delivered).  UK payment through Paypal or by postal order or Cheque. Overseas payment through paypal or in cash(US dollars and Euros are accepted).
