Label: Atlantic Records
Label / Matrix #: SD 8189
Country of Origin: USA
Year made: 1968
From Boston, this act evolved out of a garage band called C.C. And The Chasers. Richard Barnaby recalls: "As C.C. and the Chasers, we were a garage band. Jack was only thirteen at the time and we rehearsed in the basement of a friend, Tom Harrington in Arlington Mass, since none of our parents would have it! We covered The Byrds, and had a few originals, and when psychedelics hit, they hit us as well. We moved from Boston and lived in Greenwich Village from 1965-1969 and were the house band at the Bitter End Cafe. There we backed up a number of the groups of the day including First Edition (with Kenny Rogers), Neil Diamond, Linda Rondstadt and The Stone Ponys, Jerry Jef Walker, Joni Mitchell, etc. Having signed to Atlantic we moved into the psychedelic venues such as Electric Circus, Cafe Au Go Go, and The Ark. With our second album we lived and played in Vermont, and toured the East Coast, and Mid West from Toronto to Miami. We also toured both as a "B" group (supporting other groups like Chambers Brothers, Mamas and Papas, Jefferson Airplane, Butterfield Blues Band) and in our own right."
The band were also known as The Sacred Mushroom for a while, when they first relocated to New York, but adopted the Apple Pie Motherhood Band monikers after a sarcastic retort stuck. Richard: "Our manager, Marvin Laganoff got us a record deal with Atlantic, but they didn't like the Sacred Mushroom name because it was "too druggy". I remember Ted Demos (lead guitar) saying "Well how about the 'Apple Pie Motherhood Band' then" in total sarcasm, and it just stuck... all you had to do was look at us to know it was a joke."
After the band split up, Jef Labes went on to the Caldwell-Winfield Blues Band, Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt, Jesse Colin Young, and is now teaching music in elementary school in Marin County, California, which he describes as "...the most rewarding work I've ever done". He's also writing satirical musicals including "Di Di Diana", a satire exploring "Who killed Diana?"; Jack Bruno played with Second Coming a Jacksonville Florida act and contempories of Allman Bros Band; Shakey Legs Blues Band; before becoming Tina Turner's drummer for the past fifteen years. He still plays with Turner and is expecting to tour with her in 2000. Jack Bruno also joined Elton John earlier this year and is thought to be recording with him. Bruce Paine went on to the lead role as "Claude" in the San Francisco based musical "Hair" for several years, whilst Michael Sorafine also took the second male lead in the same production; Ted Demos went onto become one of L.A.'s finest Art directors and set designers for film, T.V. and commercials and both he and Bruce Paine still perform together from time to time.
