Arsenio founded the Cuban conjunto format in the 1940s containing two or three trumpets. However, unlike some of his imitators who have tended towards a conservative defence of "orthodoxy", the master himself was an experimentalist. For example, on this mid-'60s New York recording he uses a trumpet / sax combination in his conjunto, which features the legendary Marcelino Guerra and a young Santiago Ceron on vocals. Typically there are no personnel credits given for the sidemen, but thanks to the lead singers, René "El Látigo" Hernández is identified as the pianist, who takes masterfully succinct solos on "Jugando Al Silo", "Sueltala", "Quiero Mucho A Mi Suegra" and "No He Visto A Caridad". The album is replete with soloing from the sax and trumpet players and from Arsenio on tres. For instance, check out the stunning sax solos on "Necesito Una Mujer Cocinera" and "Jugando Al Silo". I have long speculated about who plays the sax and takes the trumpet solos. A likely candidate for the latter is trumpeter Alfredo "Chocolate" Armenteros. Percussionist, drummer and leader Bobby Sanabria thinks the mystery saxophonist could be either Gene Jefferson or Mauricio Smith. This is essential stuff.

A classic Latin music LP by one of the greatest artist of all time. This is one of Arsenio's best albums and every track is a classic. To have this in your collection is a must!

No Latin record collection of any worth lacks an Arsenio section. There is no more hallowed name, no more influential presence felt in either Cuban roots music or its New York Puerto Rican derivates than that of Arsenio Rodriguez. Blind since the age of seven, he played the country "tres" guitar and gave a voice to black/African Cubans at a time when white/Spanish Cubans were presumed to be "it." He called his folkloric music "quindembo," a Congolese word meaning a mixture. And as the father of modern Latin dance music, Arsenio established clave as the basis for Afro-Cuban music, introduced the son montuno in 1940, and profoundly influenced all who followed.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in a poly-lined inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
