Arthur Brown’s return to form after the commercial dilemma that was Strangelands is a Space Rock epic that manages to be playful and quirky yet incredibly enthralling and striking, with some of the most memorable riffs I’ve ever heard, period. This album is filled with sticky, earwormy sequences that shouldn’t bounce in my head for entire weeks after I’ve heard it, but they do.

Not only are Arthur’s yells and wails terribly intense, they sell the emotion of the record, it feels like an eldritch being is taking me on a tour of the cosmos.

It also has one of the (in my opinion) best instrumental tracks of the entire Prog genre with “Gypsy Escape”. It starts off foreboding and just keeps building into orgasmic bliss. I get goosebumps every single time I listen to it.

There are also some truly mind-melting sections that jarr so hard it feels like I’m entering the atmosphere. This thing just keeps me on the edge of my seat for its entire duration.

Overall, this is the perfect Psych/Prog/Space album for me. It’s not Hard Rock enough to be comparable to, say, a 2112, it’s not Psych enough to be just another The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, nor is it Prog enough to be needlessly virtuosic or self-indulgent. I have practically no complains about it.
