Description
Initially, this band called themselves “The Young Swingers” and were based in or near Santa Monica, California. The band featured John Merrill (guitar), Jim Cherniss (guitar), Barbara Robsin (vocals), Alan Brackett (bass) and Spencer Dryden (drums). It wasn’t long before they called themselves “The Ashes” and became the house band at a club called The Waleback. A couple singles were released and a compilation album called “West Coast Love-In” featured a few songs. Barbara Robison was a wonderful lead singer. At the time Spencer Dryden was their drummer, but was swayed away to replace “Skip Spence“ when he quit “The Jefferson Airplane”. Jim Cherniss also left and Barbara left to have a child. The band broke apart temporarily. Then Alan got together with Lance Baker Fent (guitar) and Jim Voigt on (drums) to form a trio called “The Crossing Guards”. John Merrill rejoined and so did Barbara Robsin and they became “The Peanut Butter Conspiracy” (PBC) and were signed to record two albums with the “Columbia” label. The first album was produced by Gary Usher and included Glen Campbell and James Burton to "beef up" the sound. The single “Dark On You Now” included on this album was a resurrected “Ashes” song. They played all the big venues up and down the west coast. A third album was in process for PBC and they decided to resurrect “The Ashes” for an album. But, Barbara could not participate as she was under contract with Columbia. Pat Taylor sung for the “new” Ashes in her place. They recorded one official album. Not a lot of psychedelics or weirdness here, but it has nice vocal harmonies and some crisp guitar. It sounds much the same as “Peanut Butter Conspiracy” without the special effects. Sadly Barbara Robsin passed away in 1988 and Jim Voigt succumbed to a heart attack in 2000.
The Cover has a very slight wear ring due to the the black and the there is a drill hole upper left. The Record has some visual imperfections, but plays EX throughout. Tough album to find in this condition.
