Assagai was an Afro-rock band from South Africa, active in the early 1970s in London. It consisted of five members: drummer Louis Moholo, trumpeter/flautist Mongezi Feza, tenor saxophonist Bizo Muggikana, guitarist Fred Cocker, and alto saxophonist Dudu Pukwana. They recorded for the British label Vertigo Records.

Assagai's self-titled debut album was released in 1971. It was reissued on CD by Repertoire Records in 1994. Their second and final album, Zimbabwe, was released later in 1971. The album was re-released as LP by Music for Pleasure label, but under a different title, AfroRock. Both their albums featured songs written by members of Jade Warrior and also included guest appearances from them as well.

In the 1960s, Pukwana, Feza and Moholo were also members of the jazz band The Blue Notes alongside Chris McGregor. Releasing only two albums, Assagai and Zimbabwe their short career was massively influential, gaining cult status before the band had split up.

ALBUM PLAYED FOR AUDIO GRADING:

Yes – brilliant! - Superb sound quality throughout!

There were a very small quantities of 1st pressings of ASSAGAI, and few of them had bright, clear audio. This barely played pressing is one of them and is a superb example of this utra rare collectors vinyl!

This great record plays up to the visual grading and beyond. Strong, undistorted sound free of obvious static repetitive noises. Super strong bright sound with minimal distractions, the album plays right through with absolutely NO distortion, jumps or repeating or unwanted noises what so ever. Barely a static tic audible and NO loud static pops or clicks. Superb sound, every minute and track has been tested and I could find no obvious sound blemishes. Some light occasional static only, and it is light and very occasional. Wonderful TOP audio, NO sticks or jumps what so ever, and virtual silence between the tracks. The music jumps out, with definition and clarity, particularly on the percussion instruments, and vocals which come through with tremendous power. As with the bass guitar and drums, whilst the guitars come through crisp and clear. I'll give a detailed account below:

Beginning with the iconic 'Telephone Girl', the music bursts in with crystal clear audio, no loud pops or clicks and nice clean run ins. The run in is so clear that you can hear a two second background of the 1st track, that is nearly always covered by even light surface sound. Moving into the wonderful 'Akasa', which demonstrates the incredible subtle production layering, with notes and effects that are usually lost on most even relatively played vinyls. Here the audio sings out with amazing clarity. There are no light static tics and barely any sound between tracks, the music comes in with amazing clarity. 

'Hey Jude' sings out with no static in the run ins and quiet areas. Great music with great clarity, and so hard to find with this type of sound. I may as well confirm now that there is not a hint of distortion anywhere on this great vinyl, and barely a trace of static. 'Cocoa' plays with crystal clear sound, and the long instrumental section layered again, sounds great. Superb clear bright sound, amazing. Amazing.

Side 2. bursts in with the incredible 'Irin Ajolawa', following near silent run ins, it sounds fantastic, with extremely clear audio. There is some background static at the start, but its far in the background. Again in the the long delicate 'Aiyeo', the audio is just superb, with no light static and extremely clear vocal layering. 'Beka' also sings out, with great clarity and an amazing lack of surface sound. This quiet track is nearly always blighted with loud pops, clicks, buzzing crackle and distortion, but not here, the audio is just superb. All the way through every track plays with incredible definition. 

The complex arrangements in 'I'll Wait for You' play so well, with astounding audio precision. A total lack of loud pops, clicks, interference, and certainly no distortion anywhere on this great pressing, makes this a truly incredible collectable press of this great record. The audio jumps out, with definition and clarity, the vocals which come through with tremendous power. Its the same with the bass guitar and drums, whilst the guitars multi layers come through crisp and clear. The tonal quality make this a sensational pressing. With the clear and extra loud First cut engineering giving the audio a vibrant sound which cannot be beaten. A great all round example of this great vinyl, with amazing audio throughout!

THE RECORD - VISUAL GRADING  

A lovely piece of HEAVY glossy vinyl. Deep clear grooves that can only be found on the original early pressings, this vinyl has been barely played, and in daylight it looks completely unplayed. The record has great shine, with NO scratches. There are a few ultra light sleeve removal marks, and just some (very) light handling marks, seen under an intense spotlight.

VINYL TESTED FOR ANY SIGNS OF WARPING:

Yes, NONE visible what so ever when tested be sight and on a moving turntable.

LABELS 

Splendid deeply coloured attractive examples.  No wear around the hole areas, with all ink uneroded and fully intact. NO spindle traces to be found. The vinyl still fits very tightly around the record spindle, and when I tested this record it felt like it had never seen a spindle before.

COVER 

Comes with original sleeve in superb condition. This is a great complete example of the brilliant cover. Being thick matt unlaminated card with the famous mapping design, these covers rarely lasted well, usually having heavy ring wear and tears and a lot of yellowing to the background. Not this one! It has no tears or splits, again very hard to find. 

It has virtually no rubbing to the edges of the spine, and barely any corner wear. The spine even has clearly defined 'pinched' ends, clearly separated by the makers marks. Unbelievable and impossibly rare like this! The cover is almost like new with very little of the yellow / toning that these covers always suffer from with age. 

A wonderful original first press example and extremely rare in this condition.

THE INNER

Comes with Original UK "VERTIGO", MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN Inner sleeve, in EXCELLENT CONDITION. No tears, splits or stains. The vinyl will of course come in a replacement plain white inner to protect the original.

RARITY

It is getting harder and harder to find good examples of early UK pressings of ASSAGAI and very hard if not almost impossible examples that are complete and intact with all the original parts. 

The cover is almost impossible to find without serious wear and even modestly worn examples are scarce! This is a stunning all round piece. With TOP AUDIO throughout! Superb! This is a genuinely rare album, and a stunning press like this is an unheard of rarity.

MINT: Virtually unplayed. The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. Cover is pristine.

EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

V.G PLUS: The record will still be nice and shiny, but may have a few light marks, and will play well. Slight wear and tear on the cover.

V.G: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items.

GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, etc.
