This St. Petersburg, Florida-based outfit was one of the first wave of US grindcore bands to emerge in the late 80s. Building on the influence of Napalm Death, the pioneering UK grind band, Assück was initially bracketed in the extreme metal genre. Steve Heritage (guitar/vocals) and Rob Proctor (drums) were the mainstays of the line-up from its original formation in 1987. Following a series of singles and split-EPs during the late 80s and early 90s, the line-up that recorded 1991’s Anticapital featured Heritage, Proctor, Paul Pavlovich (vocals) and Pete Jay (bass). Despite boasting 27 tracks the album was a typical grindcore release, short, sharp and heavily politicized. A raft of singles and compilation appearances followed, but despite critical plaudits the band remained strictly an underground concern. 1996’s self-titled EP, recorded by Heritage, Proctor and Steve Kosiba (bass), ran to an impressive 15 tracks, albeit with an extremely short running time. Assück disbanded two years later but are commonly cited as a major influence by later grindcore bands.
