Bemerkungen / Comments:

In the year of the Aswad ROCKPALAST concert a film had its premiere in the British cinemas, which showed the living conditions of Jamaican UK immigrants including the confrontations with the police and the National Front as a narrative movie. It was called “Babylon” and was the pendant to Jamaicas “The Harder They Come”. Originally Babylon was co-financed by the BBC, they though resigned their support because the topic became to controvercial. The plot was so explosive, that at the London premiere Blacks and Whites had to enter to the hall through separate entrances. The main actor of Babylon was born in Guyana and called Brinsley Forde. He was the lead singer of a band from western London founded 1974 in the Ladbroke Grove area together with drummer Angus Gaye alias “Drummie Zeb” and three further musicians, who already weren’t with them on stage in Cologne anymore. The band’s name is Arabic and was meant as a statement: Aswad – black!

When Aswad played the Rockpalast recording at the Studio-B of the Westdeutscher Rundfunk nowbody expected them to become pop stars in the future, yet. At this time they still were part of the London punky reggae party, which Lee Perry initialized with a Bob Marley song, on which the 18 year old Drummie Zeb did the drumming. Aswad, as well as Steel Pulse and Matumbi, joined the coalition of British underdogs against the upcoming Thatcherism and played together with punk bands in the line-up of the Rock Against Racism campaigne in universities, youth centers and clubs throughout the island.

The Rockpalast concert shows the Band in an early stage, as they only already released two of their about 30 albums: influenced by punk, raw and untamed, years before they rose to be one of the most important reggae bands from Great Britain next to Steel Pulse. - Helmut Philipps (September 2016)

Im Jahr des Aswad-Konzertes für den ROCKPALAST kam ein Film in die englischen Kinos, der das Leben jamaikanischer UK-Immigranten sowie deren Konfrontationen mit Polizei und National Front als Spielfilm inszenierte. Der Film hieß Babylon und war das Pendant zu Jamaikas The Harder They Come, über den der Doors Drummer John Densmore sagt: „The Harder They Come brachte die wichtigste Musik der 70er und 80er Jahre. Reggae drehte den Beat um, setzte politische Texte darauf und bewirkte, dass die Menschen sich anders bewegten und anders dachten.“ Ursprünglich wurde Babylon von der BBC co-finanziert, die zog sich aber zurück, weil ihr das Thema zu brisant wurde. Der Plot war so heiß, dass bei der Premiere in London Blacks und Whites nur durch getrennte Türen Einlass in den Saal fanden. Der Hauptdarsteller von Babylon stammte aus Guyana und hieß Brinsley Forde. Er war der Leadsänger einer Band aus dem Westen Londons, die sich 1974 in der Gegend um Ladbroke Grove mit den Schlagzeuger Angus Gaye alias „Drummie Zeb“ und drei weiteren Musikern, die in Köln schon nicht mehr dabei waren, gefunden hatte. Der Bandname stammte aus dem Arabischen und war gemeint als Statement: Aswad – Schwarz!

Als Aswad für die Rockpalast-Aufzeichnung im Studio-B des Westdeutschen Rundfunks auftrat, ahnte niemand, dass sie einmal Pop-Star-Status erlangen würden. Zu dem Zeitpunkt waren sie noch Teil der Londoner Punky Reggae Party, die Lee Perry 1977 mit einem Bob Marley Song ausgerufen hatte, bei dessen Aufnahme der 18jährige Drummie Zeb am Schlagzeug gesessen hatte. Aswad schlossen sich, so wie auch Steel Pulse oder Matumbi, der Koalition britischer Underdogs gegen den aufkeimenden Thatcherismus an und spielte zusammen mit Punk-Bands im Rahmen der Rock Against Racism Kampagne inselweit in Universitäten, Jugendheimen und Clubs.

Das ROCKPALAST-Konzert zeigt die Band in einem frühen Stadium, als sie erst zwei ihrer knapp 30 Alben aufgenommen hatte: vom Punk beeinflusst, rau und ungestüm, Jahre bevor sie neben Steel Pulse zur wichtigsten Reggae-Formation Britanniens aufstieg. - Helmut Philipps (September 2016)
