Label Condition: Both in beautiful condition, truly gorgeous labels that are ultra clean, fresh and attractive. Side one – the flying horse side – have barely a spindle trace to be seen. Side two has only a tiny few very faint traces. These smooth finished variants will prove incredibly difficult to find better.

Cat Number: PEG-1.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Formed in 1969 as the rise in British progressive rock was getting into top gear, the original three members were: Vincent Crane (formerly Crazy World of Arthur Brown – keyboards), Nick Graham (bass) and Carl Palmer (formerly Crazy World of Arthur Brown – drums). This is the band’s third album, it blends progressive rock with heavy metal elements, again a very fine album – all the first three are worth checking out, they should appeal to fans of Black Sabbath, Kingdom Come and Black Widow et al. It sold quite well on the success of the hit single ‘The Devil’s Answer’ that was not included on the UK version of the album. The cover has mildly aged, but still a nice one. The record is superb and appears hardly even played and offers very clean and impressive sound, this always has to be the most significant factor.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Artwork drawn by Roger Dean. Printed and made by the E. J. Day Group.

Cover Front: Like so many of this time, another one prone to all forms of wear. This front has a few light marks and small surface blemishes mostly seen under angled light, but nothing remotely major. The lack of rubbing, sticker marks or tears all major pluses, hardly any creasing either. It retains fine colour with overall, only gentle reminders of its considerable age, but still a nice looking front.

Cover Back: The back is largely the same with only fairly light rim rubbing near the top with the top left corner tip rubbed. All things many collectors consider normal for an unprotected gatefold cover now 43-years-old.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Impressively clean and hardly aged with superb Roger Dean artwork. The odd tiny surface rub or minor light crease, little else.

Top Edges: Light to moderate patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Moderate rubbing, being a pale surface, this registers less. All top and bottom edges are straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and sharp to very with little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on, this cover actually made with slightly thicker card than some. One small ‘wave’ on the back edge near the top, but little else really to fault. Record entered on the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight and very clean with barely any compression. Folded very square, so the edges meet up flush and parallel. A few small surface chips or rubs with only the ‘I’ in ‘In’ clipped, all other text is present and very solid and easily read. Even the vulnerable folds retain near full ink cover. A very respectable spine for a vulnerable sleeve.

Corners: The corners have moderate rubbing, a fraction less on the spine and retain fine shape.

Cover Summary: A very respectable example of another difficult matt gatefold cover that is seldom seen without wear or issues. This has gentle reminders of it’s great age, but is still attractive overall as I hope my pictures show. Not for the highly discerning, but many collectors will enjoy it. With a lovely clean and hardly played record inside, this is still an impressive package.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: the plain white unlined solid inner sleeve again has gently aged with a little darkening of the seam adhesive areas. One corner crease but little else, all the edges are unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+) to EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual copy that I feel sure has been played very little. Very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. Any surface traces are few, very fine and faint as seen with scrutiny under bright angled light. No penetrating scratches on these lovely age-defying playing surfaces. In fact one of the cleanest examples of this title I have yet seen. The cover may have aged a little, but the record has not and most collectors will enjoy this prog classic.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lovely clean record offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a full dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sound minimal and faint, this too played on a very revealing Linn LP12 Sondek. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressively clean pressed Pegasus record which merits strong recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
