Description
In 1966 there were a multitude of tie-in items issued to capitalize on the wildly popular ABC TV show "Batman" which starred Adam West, Burt Ward, that fabulous George Barris Batmobile and a host of renowned actors as the villain of the week. Only a scant few pieces of memorabilia featured actual images of the actors from the show, probably due to licensing and royalty issues. However, the actual stars from the show did try their hand at recording. Burt Ward's inconsequential single is tough enough to find, but few know that Adam West also recorded a solo single. Entitled "Miranda" it was released on 20th Century Fox (Fox #627) and has Adam talk/singing a Batman flavored narrative. The 45 is rarely found but what we have here is a whole other matter; a virtually unknown PHOTO PICTURE SLEEVE for the single with Adam in and out of his Batman costume!!
People always ask us to name some of the rarest vintage Batman items made. In twenty years of collecting, we have seen exactly TWO of these items. How rare is it? We had an opportunity to show our own copy to Adam West himself and he exclaimed "I have never seen this before!" "Look, I have a picture sleeve!" he yelled to his manager. It was all we could do to stop him from autographing it with a large black marker. With the same picture displayed on both sides featuring the large images of Adam and Batman, this is as visually arresting as it is rare. Most likely, it was intended as a promotional only issue, meant to catch a station manager's or programmer's eye and spark some airtime. There are stock, retail copies of the song on the familiar black Fox label, but NONE to date have been found within this pic sleeve.
Clearly an original 1966 release and not a scan, reprint or recreation of any kind, the printed sleeve shows some moderate wear and is lightly aged. Most likely, it was printed on an off-white or eggshell colored paper stock, just as the similarly constructed and nearly as rare pic sleeve for the show's Theme Song. In any event, the worst flaws on this example is a sticker stain, some foxing spots and a scribbled ink name, all on the "B" side of the sleeve. There is noticeable wear and wrinkling to the bottom edge, but there are no seam splits despite the obvious wear. We see many small tears and wrinkles along the top opening but ring wear is very minimal. Overall, we grade the sleeve a VG- or C6-, but finding one in better condition, heck, finding one at all is extraordinarily difficult.
Included with the sleeve is a yellow label Promo copy of the Miranda record. Clearly printed on the label is "Promotional Copy" and "Not For Sale" on both sides. There is a small matchhead sized label pick-off and sticker stain to the B side, only, and some very light soiling, but the vinyl is essentially flawless. With not even a fingerprint on the vinyl, we grade the disc VG++ or C9-, only because of that one small label flaw on the B side.
An absolute treat to see, this difficult to find record is a must-have for Batman, character or TV collectors alike. This one has a Reserve that is but a fraction of what we paid years ago to get our own copy! Please do not ask us to close the auction early, sell the item outright or reveal our Reserve, as these are requests we cannot accommodate.
Before making payment, PLEASE WAIT FOR OUR INVOICE, NOT eBay's Win Notice. We normally email Invoices directly to you the day following the close of the auction! We do NOT use eBay's Invoicing system. If after three days you do not see an Invoice from us, it was probably blocked by your ISP's anti-spam techniques (especially if you use AOL or one of the free e-mail services). Email us and we will send a duplicate through a different account. We have experienced a great difficulty with Invoice delivery recently and have no way of verifying whether Invoices have been received or not. It is YOUR responsibility to contact us if no Invoice is received!
For estimation purposes only, when packaged this item will weigh approximately 2#, although actual shipping costs will be Invoiced upon the auction's close. But, to get a shipping cost estimate, even for a foreign destination, click here and enter the pertinent information. Shipping point is Zip 06460. Estimated weight is stated stated above. Preferred service class is Priority Mail, although the less expensive Media Mail is certainly an alternative within the US and usually Airmail Letter Post if abroad, for small parcels.
