Description

Originally recorded in New York City in November 1968 and released in 1969 on the legendary avant-garde label ESP-Disk under catalog number ESP 1091, Skillfullness stands as an incredibly vital and rare testament to the evolution of free jazz. Primarily celebrated as a masterful bassist for icons like Albert Ayler and Cecil Taylor, this essential solo outing features multi-instrumentalist Alan Silva exploring ecstatic sonic territory on violin, cello, and piano. Accompanied by a stellar lineup including Karl Berger on vibraphone, Becky Friend on flute, and Dave Burrell on piano, the two lengthy compositions, Skillfullness and Solestrial, beautifully bridge loose improvisation with a cohesive architectural depth inspired by Silva's work with Sun Ra. Both the heavy black vinyl disc and the iconic black-and-white portrait cardboard outer jacket are in wonderful shape, strictly grading as a consistent, clean, and well-preserved Very Good Plus.
