Description
Alastair Galbraith And Robert Scott- Black Forest + Star Ladies/Middle C Trap + Night In St. Cloud + The Four Basics LATHE CUT NZ 7" EP (self released- Edition of 50)
Crazy rare lathe cut collaboration between:Alastair Galbraith (Xpressway/Plagal Grind/The Rip on Flying Nun/Mountain Goats collaborator/A Handful Of Dust member)
and
Robert Scott (The Bats/The Clean/The Magick Heads/The Weeds all on Flying Nun and Electric Blood).
This was, I understand, an edition of 60 that came in 2 different cover variations (this edition, I think Robert Scott's version, included this design with a plastic sleeve housing a 1940's Bank Of New Zealand, Dunedin check filled in by hand by Robert Scott) while there is another cover which is just blank with paint splatter ala Jackson Pollack.
A few were sold by Alastair Galbraith at Terrastock II in San Francisco, 1998, but it may well be the most rare of records from both artists.
Tracks are mostly in line with Alastair Galbraith's work and Robert Scotts work on his first Flying Nun solo album The Creeping Unknown.
Tracks are:
1. Black Forest 1:24
2. Star Ladies 3:12
1. Middle C Trap 1:40
2. Night In St. Cloud 1:24
3. The Four Basics 1:10
A M G says of Alastair Galbraith:
New Zealand-based singer/songwriter Alastair Galbraith first emerged during the mid-'80s, playing in Dunedin area bands including the Rip and Plagal Grind. Making his solo debut with 1992's Morse, he became known for his signature abbreviated songwriting style, with most of his compositions clocking in under two minutes. After 1995's Talisman, Galbraith returned three years later with Mirrorwork. Cry followed in 2000.
and
Alistair Galbraith quietly coaxes inspired songs regardless of his instrumental limitations. Viola, guitar, and organ come into the fold, yet instrumentation seems secondary to intent, as the real fabric of these songs is emotional. A deeply personal music, the influence of Kevin Ayers, Syd Barrett, and Robert Wyatt seem relevant, mainly because his vision is as unique and uninhibited as his elders. His musical kinship is with Richard Youngs, the Mountain Goats, and Chris Knox, artists who, like Alistair Galbraith, give listeners a similar kind of glimpse into a private musical world with every album.
A M G says of Robert Scott:
Singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and visual artist Robert Scott has been a staple in the New Zealand alternative rock scene since the 1980s, holding down bass, guitar, and songwriting duties for jangle pop legends the Clean and later the Bats. In the 1990s he led the folk-pop outfit Magick Heads and contributed both music and cover art for a host of other regional acts. He released his debut, largely instrumental solo album, The Creeping Unknown, in 2001 on the Flying Nun label, followed a decade later by the more pop-oriented Ends Run Together (2011).
7" is MINT- (note that lathe cut discs have a fair amount of surface noise from the nature of the King lathe cutting process)/Cover is a 1940's Bank Of New Zealand, Dunedin check filled in by hand by Robert Scott and is VG+ to MINT- .
