This recording received a 10+ rating in James Mitchell’s paper The Golden Era of RCA Records
The EMG Monthly Letter gave a maximum two star rating.
The Stereo Record Guide Volume 3 wasn’t so complimentary
“One cannot help feeling after listening to three and a bit sides of this music, that a more imaginative choice of conductor might have been made…………The RCA recording is excellent: a little on the dry side, it is never lustreless and has plenty of sparkle.”
Record Condition (Play graded throughout)
Prior to playing, the records were cleaned on my Moth Record Cleaning Machine.Playback equipment comprised a Thorens TD160, Linn Basik LVX Arm with Audio Technica AT-95E Cartridge.
The records were examined in bright sunlight and have numerous marks on all four sides, most of which are non- sounding. The Record sleeve is clean with a little wear along the top opening edge. There is a bump / crease at the bottom left hand corner.
Record 1 Side 1
There are a total of twelve to fifteen, faint non repetitive ticks throughout the four pieces. There is no deterioration in sound quality.
Record 1 Side 4
The Rapsodie Espagnole has some occasional faint background noise noticeable in the quieter passages due to marks in the vinyl, but again there is no deterioration in overall sound quality.
Record 2 Side 2
There is faint background noise just at the start of Triana. There are twenty repetitive ticks near the start of Almeria. There is no deterioration in overall sound quality.
Record 2 Side 3
There is occasional faint background noise in El Polo. There are twelve ticks in El Albaicin and two loud ticks in Malaga.
Eritana sums up these records: I really thought that due to the number of marks on this track it would tick all the way through. In fact it’s virtually silent, with no ticks that I can detect. As with all the other tracks there is no deterioration in sound quality whatsoever.
