CACKLIN' HEN ALBERT HASH-OLD TIME FIDDLER & The Whitetop Mountain Band Fiddle, Guitar, Claw-hammer Banjo & Some Vocals Albert Hash and the Whitetop Mountain Band have come out from the hills and hollows surrounding Whitetop Mountain to make their second album. Many of the tunes 60 year old Albert plays, were learned approximately fifty years ago in the Whitetop area. He plays "Cumberland Gap" the real old time way he learned it from his great uncle George Finley years ago. His fiddle is tuned in what is called straight D (DADD). Albert’s version of RAGGEDY ANN is unique, and was learned from old time fiddler Corbitt Stamper. "FLOP-EARED MULE" was learn- ed long ago also from Corbitt Stamper, who can still fiddle very well, indeed! Albert is joined by Thornton Spencer on "LEATHER BRITCHES" and "CACK- LIN’ HEN" for some fine twin fiddling. Thornton is also heard fiddling on "WHISPERING WINDS" and "SHORTENING BREAD", and does the fiddle work on all vocal numbers. He is also a capable rhythm guitar player, as his back up on "CUMBERLAND GAP" shows. Emily Paxton Spencer, Thornton’s wife, provides rhythm guitar throughout the record, and is featured on all songs. Flurry Dowe, who does a fine job on claw-hammer banjo, both out front and in backing up fiddling and singing, is much in demand by musicians around the Whitetop Mountain. Flurry is featured on "SHORT- ENING BREAD", a tune he learned from the wonder- ful banjo picking of Johnt Blevins of Whitetop. Tom Barr does a solid job of bass playing for the Whitetop Mountain Band. He hails from the Galax area. ALL TUNES P.D. SIDE A 1.
