Album Notes:
Alice in Hell is the debut album by the Canadian thrash metal band Annihilator, released in 1989. This album and its successor Never, Neverland are considered masterpieces of Canadian heavy metal.
Annihilator is a Canadian thrash metal band founded in 1984 by vocalist, guitarist and bassist Jeff Waters. They are the highest selling heavy metal group in Canadian history, having sold 12 million albums worldwide, although most of their sales have been generated outside of the band’s home country.
Since its inception, Annihilator has released fourteen studio albums and has undergone many line-up changes. The band now consists of two official members, with Waters on both guitar and bass and Dave Padden, who joined in 2003, as a rhythm guitarist/vocalist. Since 2007, Waters and Padden have assembled touring musicians to perform with them. Their latest studio album, Feast, was released in 2013.
Album Information:
Alice in Hell was the one of the five Annihilator albums to feature songwriting contributions from former singer John Bates, who was credited as the co-writer of the songs “Alison Hell”, “W.T.Y.D.”, “Burns Like a Buzzsaw Blade” and “Human Insecticide”. Bates also co-wrote some songs on their 1994 album King of the Kill and their next three albums Refresh the Demon, Remains and Criteria for a Black Widow.
The album was re-released twice: 1998 with 3 demo tracks as bonus tracks and again on September 9, 2003 in a two-disc compilation set along with Never, Neverland, entitled Two From The Vault. One of the demo tracks, “Powerdrain”, serves as the base of the song “Sonic Homicide” on Annihilator's 1999 album Criteria for a Black Widow.
To promote Alice in Hell, Annihilator supported Onslaught internationally on their In Search of Sanity tour, and Testament (along with Wrathchild America) in the United States on their Practice What You Preach tour. After the tour was over, the band began preparations for their next album Never, Neverland.
Reception:
Allmusic
Alice in Hell has received mostly positive reviews. Allmusic’s Eduardo Rivadavia gave it three stars out of five, and states that “Annihilator’s brand of technical, thinking man’s thrash metal garnered many fans with this fine debut, arguably the best release of the band’s career.”
