Ultra rare avant garde poetry lp on Folkways sub-label Broadside documenting a mid-60s "benefit reading for the New York Workshop in Nonviolence at St. Mark's Church in the Bouwerie," with a stellar lineup of experimental poets from the beat, Black Mountain, language, and Fluxus movements. This is the earliest appearance on vinyl of the legendary Fluxus poet Jackson Mac Low; other highlights include The Fugs founder Ed Sanders' "Peace Freak Poem", Schwerner's reading from his famous Tablets, and the opening gem by Ginsberg reading his "Auto Poesy to Nebraska." The album was recorded and edited by beat poetry scholar Ann Charters, and the front cover photo is credited to her. Includes 16-page photocopied insert with complete text of all poems (not the original insert, rather this is a stapled booklet of double-sided photocopies as is sometimes found with archive Folkways lps).

artist info from album notes etc.:
Ed Sanders is an American poet, singer, and activist who led the influential proto-punk psycheddelic folk band The Fugs along with Tuli Kupferberg and members of the Holy Modal Rounders, ran the legendary NYC Peace Eye Bookstore, and worked with Lawrence Ferlinghetti and the San Francisco Diggers. Jackson Mac Low (aka MacLowe) was a poet, playwright, performance artist, painter, and composer who was known for his pioneering use of indeterminacy and early computers to generate poems; he worked with Pauline Oliveros, Charles Bernstein, John Cage, and his wife Anne Tardos, was a member of Judith Malina and Julian Beck's experimental theater group The Living Theatre, associated with the New York School of early postwar experimental composers (Earle Brown, Christian Wolff, Morton Feldman), and was a founding member of the Fluxus art movement (Nam June Paik, George Maciunas, Milan Knizak, Joseph Beuys, Philip Corner, Richard Maxfield, Emmett Williams, Paul Panhuysen, Takehisa Kosugi, Juan Hidalgo, La Monte Young, Yoko Ono, Walter Marchetti, Henry Flynt). Ginsberg was associated with the beat poetry movement along with Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, Lucien Carr, Brion Gysin, Gregory Corso, John Giorno, Anne Waldman, Kenneth Rexroth, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Amiri Baraka, Diane di Prima, Bob Kaufman, Ken Nordine, and Kenneth Patchen. This lp should be of interest to fans of the Broken Music catalog of artists record works.
