Description
The Almanac Singers, featuring Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie, were perhaps the most legendary American folk group, coming together in the early 1940s, when they began recording mostly political songs, reflecting their often controversial political stance. "Deep Sea Chanteys and Whaling Ballads," a traditional folk music album of three 78s released by General Records, was produced by the most famous American folk collector, Alan Lomax, and features six songs, two on each disc.
Deep Sea Chanteys and Whaling Ballads was originally two albums combined for release in 1941. The linup of the group at the time was Millard Lampell, Lee Hays, Pete Seeger, and Woody Guthrie. The songs are: Blow the Man Down, Blow Ye Winds Heigh-Ho, The Coast of High Barbary, The Golden Vanity, Haul Away Joe, and Way, Rio.
It is rare to find a complete copy of this album, as 78s are extremely fragile, and the Almanac Singers were widely banned in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The three discs appear to be in good used condition. The paper covers of each disc are also complete and intact, but the binding holding the front and back cover to the discs has come apart. Nonetheless, this is a rare find.
Because of the fragility of 78s, I would prefer pickup if the winning buyer can get to New York City. However, I will ship this item to the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom with the understanding that, despite good packing, 78s can break just from being jarred in transit. I have sat on an airplane with 78s in my lap and had some of them crack due to the change in air pressure. Therefore, the buyer accepts all responsibility.
