Baron Elmo proudly presents a vintage vinyl anthology of dark delights from the incomparable VELVET UNDERGROUND: Andy Warhol's Velvet Underground featuring Nico, a UK import double LP issued in 1971 by the MGM label. This is a gorgeous first-edition copy, with the spine number MGM 2 LP 2683 006 SELECT, with both records housed in the original poly-lined inner sleeves. This was the very first attempt of many to anthologize the Velvets, and cut for cut, it remains the best, selecting choice gems from the first three albums. Words are poor tools when attempting to encompass the fierce, jagged beauty of the Velvets and their music, a marriage of art, rock music and avant-garde whose shockwaves are still reverberating through the body of popular culture to this day. Along with the Stooges, MC5 and New York Dolls, the Velvet Underground was a part of the catalyst that helped spark punk rock. Their music was an long, cold glimpse into the Summer Of Love's alter ego, complete with graphic, unapologetic descriptions of drug use and sleazy sex... yet when the moment demanded, the Velvets could achieve moments of ravishing beauty and lyricism. Lead vocalist / guitarist / songwriter Lou Reed was a visionary in every sense of the word, his musical ideas and lyrics charting bold new terrain with each album. Occasional lead singer Nico adds an enchanting thread of ice to the Velvets' fire with her statuesque vocals. Bassist John Cale was weaned on deconstructing classical theory, the perfect avant-garde foil to help bring Reed's terse songs to life. And when he'd make the switch to electric viola, Cale's sound evoked the terror of Reed's compositions, the bowed strings screeching like a runaway subway car. Drummer Maureen Tucker played like no one before, jettisoning the backbeat to explore her own unique pulse. Her frantic swipes could mimic a galloping rush in "Heroin," or emphasize the dark solemnity of "All Tomorrow's Parties." Guitarist Sterling Morrison was a master of his craft, ably switching from the oddly raga-like plucking on "All Tomorrow's Parties") to the head-down-and-into-the storm assault on the ultra-edgy "I Heard Her Call My Name," always adding just the right element to fatten the cacophony. Four sides, nearly eighty minutes of prime Velvet Underground. Superb Warhol-like artwork inside and outside the glossy gatefold jacket completes the package. Andy Warhol's Velvet Underground featuring Nico has been out of print since forever, and it's never been released on CD. This copy is in superlative shape, with both records just a small notch below near mint, and the cover in extremely fine condition – no splits, no ringwear, just the mildest indications of handling wear and a very slightly dented upper-left-hand corner.
