Description
I am selling this copy of Anne Briggs' 'Sing a Song for You' LP, released on the Bo'weavil label under license from Fledgling Records, in 2007. The catalogue number is Weavil 20. This is a limited, numbered issue, 352/1000.
This is the first vinyl issue of this recording, previously only available on CD. This is distinct from the 2018 RSD release, they do not seem to share the same metal masters. Runouts show "65715 1A WEAVIL 20" and "65715 1B WEAVIL 20".
The sleeve is overall in excellent condition. There are limited signs of handling on the glossy label, which shows up fingerprints etc. There is no ring-wear apparent on the green cardboard area, as the cardboard is so thick, but it does seem to have come through very slightly on the back glossy label, and even more slightly on the front bit, near the spine. I've tried to photograph the label area where the ring-wear shows up. Labels have very slight signs of contact with spindle, which is difficult to photograph.
Visually the vinyl is glossy. Under very bright light, there is evidence of very limited wear to the surface of the record, but these look like the sort of marks from the factory press. There is a prominent scuff on one of the runouts, probably responsible for the tick detailed below.
I have tried to examine it under bright light from a mobile phone but it can be difficult to see everything, even more difficult to photograph so please take this only as an indication of wear, and the following play-test is more important.
I have made a concerted effort to listen to this critically, and I hope the following remarks are helpful.
There were one or two minor crackles on the last track of side A, and there is a tick on the lead-in of side A. Similarly the lead-in to side B has a few crackles. There is a single prominent pop about 40s-1.30s into the first track on side B, not exactly sure at what point but it only lasts a few revolutions. This is the only pop that I could hear anywhere on the record side A or B.
The second track of side B is unaccompanied singing and there are a few very light crackles on some of the moments of silence, about 30-60s into it, but otherwise free of crackles.
The third track has one or two crackles in the second verse. These were quite difficult to hear, I only noticed these under critical listening when play-testing this, and are nothing like the pop on track 1, or the tick leading into side 1. They may well be part of the recording, which was recorded to analogue tape.
The fourth track is similarly unaccompanied song. There may be extremely light crackles like the second track about 15-30s in, but I wasn't sure about this, as they are so minor, even compared to the second track, and this track has fewer moments of silence.
There are similar extremely minor crackles in the gaps between songs and of course on the lead-in grooves but other than the tick on side 1 noted these do not seem to extent to the actual music content except where noted.
