ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This lovely LP from Decca (LXT 5311, English pressing, orange/silver label, stereo) features conductor Ernest Ansermet and l'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in magical performances of the music of Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

Included are the following works:

Christmas Eve – Suite

May Night – Overture*

Sadko – Musical Picture Op. 5

The Flight Of The Bumble-Bee (From "The Tale Of Tsar Saltan")

Dubinushka Op. 62

Russian Easter Festival Overture Op. 49*

These works were all recorded at Victoria Hall, Geneva, in November 1956* and May 1957 (producer: James Walker / engineers: James Brown* and Roy Wallace).

Arguably among the high-water marks in Ansermet's discography, Ansermet's Christmas Eve Suite boasts the remarkable Decca engineering that typified the 'Golden Age of Stereo', recorded in the warm, atmospheric acoustics of Geneva's Victoria Hall. Ansermet was among Rimsky-Korsakov's finest exponents, and his readings boast an insight and color few have matched, with the OSR on truly brilliant form throughout – remarkable recordings.

There are fine liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in English only. The lovely cover art was executed by Francis Phillips, who illustrated the children's classic Black Beauty, among many other books and publications.

CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is very minor bumping/wear at corners, as well as slight laminate lift, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, owners' markings, bends, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and extremely attractive – overall, a very striking and handsome collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, really this is a fine copy and the playback is enjoyable. Those requiring a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this is an excellent collector's copy.
