Antique Chinese 78 RPM records. Red and Green Dragon Columbia Phonograph Co.
I can’t read Cantonese, and I don’t know a lot about early 20th century Chinese music, so I can’t say for sure what genre these records belong to or who the artists are. Each record features what sounds like one female vocalist who sounds very similar (and may be the same artist.), and there is a variety of instrumentation which includes flutes, strings, and percussion. The vocalist(s) occasionally goes from singing to spoken word so perhaps these are Chinese Opera. As indicated on the label, the language is Cantonese. The recording sounds very primitive and I’m guessing the technology is acoustic rather than electrical. Both records played all the way through, but not surprisingly there is a typical amount of surface noise which include clicks and swishes. Both records have scratches and blemishes typical of used disks from this era. The record with the green label has a chip on the outer edge (visible in one of the pictures). Fortunately the damage does not intrude onto the area where the music starts. Chinese records of this vintage seem to be quite collectible nowadays, and these two are unlike anything I have ever heard.
