Label Conditions: Both in very clean and attractive condition with generally light spindle marks being faint and showing little. Another from the DJ collection acquired in the Spring of this year, this has a few more spindle marks than the others from this lot but the record plays to absolute perfection from start to finish and will never be beaten for sound.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 141 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Brief Info: Famed drummer who has worked with many bands and artists including John Mayall, Frank Zappa, Ian Hunter, Lou Reed, Jefferson Starship, Jeff Beck, David Bowie, Whitesnake, Sammy Hagar, UFO and Journey. This was his debut ‘Retaliation’ album and features wonderful blues that will delight the connoisseur listener. For fans of early Fleetwood Mac, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Chicken Shack et al., this is in a similar vein and will equally thrill I’m, sure. A superb copy that looks hardly even played with the shine and lustre of a new record. It sounds fantastic too and few mono examples will ever be offered that will match this. The cover is also in fantastic condition and fully laminated. Certainly a rare opportunity for the serious blues and 60s collector.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Moderate.

Cover Grade and Format: Undergraded at EX++, this looks really lovely. A single, fully laminated cover that was printed and made in England.

Lamination – Front & Back: Covers over 40-years-of-age rarely get seen much better. Both sides have an incredible shine and clarity with real freshness. Doubt if this or the record has seen light-of-day for decades. Very few marks and most-all adhered with just a tiny thin sliver on the spine edge which remains near invisible. A very few light surface creases also show little and there is no friction rubbing or dulling. Even under light, both surfaces have a super-smoothness and the lack of even surface marks will be easily apparent. All the laminate ends, and there are several on the back, are very clean with no grime-line formation. A very nice cover indeed.

Spine and Text: Practically as new: Solid, straight with minimal traces of compression, the ends are tapered in manufacture and both are very neat indeed. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: All four in superb condition wtih barely any traces of wear and fantastic pointed shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this scarce late 60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Undergraded again at EX++, a few faint paper rubs when scrutinised under light but these playing surfaces have NO marks of any significance at all and this record plays as close to Mint as you will ever hear from a mono record this great age. A super visual copy that is super clean, very shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed – this has the lustre and freshness of a record barely handled or likely played. No scratches and even fine hairlines are hard to locate and visually a super record that should please most collectors again.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This amazing blues record plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed stereo sound. Barely even any surface sound and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Now over forty years old, how many copies will survive in this incredible condition? Without any doubt one for the blues connoisseur. Few copies will match let alone outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – just imagine the condition most of these will be seen and offered in – chalk and cheese – the sound on this copy will remind what they sounded like when first purchased, it really is that good. This copy will prove near impossible to find significantly better for top audio quality and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
