Art Laboe was essentially the Alan Freed of Los Angeles. He was the most influential white DJ on KPOP and played rock and roll from Scrivners Drive-in at Sunset and Cahuenga. He met Sam Cooke when Cooke came to the drive-in to promote a record and Art liked Sam. Laboe also hosted regular shows at the Los Angeles Country Fair in Pomonoa. If you look at the cover of the LP you'll see Laboe in front of an integrated audience of blacks, whites and Hispanics. The album, on STARLA (Stars of Laos Angeles) features national stars like Marvin & Johnny ("Cherry Pie"), Ron Holden ("Love You So") and "Why Don't You Write Me" (The Jacks). Also local favorites like Little Julian Herrera, Sonny Knight and Chuck Higgins. 12 cuts all together. This is a genuine piece of West Coast history. LP is in great shape and the cover is nearly perfect. Laboe went on to found the long-lasting "Oldies But Goodies" series and founded a wonderful Sunset Boulevard Oldies Club.
