Description

Art Pepper must stand alone as one the greatest giants of modern jazz. The raw emotion in his playing, his phrasing, tone and mastery of his saxophone are second to none. That being said there is still a raw edge which transmits itself through every track. He managed to surround himslef with great rhythm sections and on this vast collection you will hear some wonderful piano from George Cables among others.

Listed in particular to Pepper's "Everything Happens to Me" and to "Body & Soul". He even plays the clarinet on "When You're Smiling" and this is a complete revelation! He plays the clarinet like a saxophone. There are some absolutely fantastic twelve bars such as "Roadgame". The recordings are atmospheric and have been superbly re-mastered onto CD.

All-in-all, if you like Pepper then this boxed set should be in your collection. I cannot recommend it too highly and if you add the Village Vanguard Sessions you will have a very complete collection of this great player.

Box is slightly torn at the corner but it is superficial damage and the cds remain mint.
