Arthur Tatum Jr. (October 13, 1909 – November 5, 1956) was an outstanding American jazz pianist. Art Tatum is known to the world of jazz piano as the supreme master of the keyboard, the pianist whose virtuosity baffled classical and jazz musicians alike. Nearly blind and mostly self-taught, Tatum played with the speed of light, adding complex chordal combinations to a swing that was exceptionally powerful, even without the support of a rhythm section. His style was grounded in the stride school of piano jazz, but wasn’t in any way bound by it. Tatum is still idolized by other jazz pianists, many of whom have vainly attempted to emulate his brilliant style over the years.
Tatum's four-year absence from the recording studios as a soloist ended when Norman Granz, who owned Clef Records, decided to record his solo playing in a way that was "unprecedented in the recording industry: invite him into the studio, start the tape, and let him play whatever he felt like playing during 1953- 1955.
*Norman Granz (August 6, 1918 – November 22, 2001) was an American jazz record producer and concert promoter. He founded the record labels Clef, Norgran and Verve. Granz was acknowledged as "the most successful impresario in the history of jazz". Granz is also known for his anti-racist position and for integrating audiences. *Pablo Records was founded by Granz in 1973, more than a decade after he had sold his earlier catalog (including Verve Records) to MGM Records.
