Description

Arthur Conley original 1967 performance contract.

A chance to own a unique piece of soul music history. From the Walden Artists and Promotions / Paragon estate. Phil Walden was a close friend and business partner of Otis Redding, and was responsible for managing the appearances of most contracted R&B acts from Stax, Atlantic and other labels across the southern states in the 1960s and early 1970s. This contract is an original performance booking document (AGVA #107171) between the agency and Super Attractions of New York for series of appearances by Arthur Conley in New York, Washington DC, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Performance dates through April and May 1967.

Details of venue locations, rehearsal and show times, fees, terms and conditions, and deposit requirements are referenced. The package also comes with a rider attached to the contract detailing venue locations and show times. This particular contract is historically significant, as it marks the exact months during which "Sweet Soul Music" reached #2 in the Hot Top 100 Billboard and the Billboard Hot R&B single charts. The intention of this series of appearances was to promote the record nationally. Conley was kept busy during this period between these live performances and TV appearances on Dick Clark's American Bandstand.

As shown in image, the contract has had white correction fluid applied to sections in the contract where adjustment was required to account for rider details. Otherwise is in very good condition, with minimal creasing and no tears. The rider is in excellent condition, with no creases or tears.

In very good condition for age. A well preserved item, especially considering this document is over 50 years old.
