The fifth full-length Bad Brains record, and follow up to 1989's, 'Quickness', marked their first upon signing to major label, Epic Records, while it's generally considered to be somewhat of a controversial outlier in their discography. This is due, in no small part, to its notable absence of vocalist, HR, replaced here by Israel Joseph I, while Cro-Mags drummer Mackie Jayson would be fully enlisted as Earl Hudon's replacement after his session work on their preceding album. Somewhat noted for causing the identity crisis of their funk metal crossover thrash experiments following the slew of acts who would come out of the woodwork heralding the band's latter-day material as intrinsic influence, 'Rise', is definitely due to its own individual reassessment with regards to its place in the legacy of one of the all-time greats.
