Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with spindle marks on the lighter side of moderate. These being find and faint and showing little.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 132 grams. A little above average for it’s era but quite typical for Decca.

Brief Info: The second proper solo Barbara Dickson album. Her early works are from her folk period and these sold sparsely, hence they are fairly elusive. A Scottish lady with a superb voice and her early works are in demand from folk collectors. Things were soon to change however – she was offered vocal roles in musicals and hit singles then followed and her popularity became much greater. The early folk albums were very special however and few had a much purer and stronger vocal than Dickson. This album without doubt is one of her very best and this a very nice first issue example.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single format with front Clarifoil laminate. This covers allt he closed edge folds and ends on the back via the spine. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace. Includes the Decca inner.

Lamination & Front: A very nice front that has aged little with few blemishes. A little mild burring on the right entrance edge and a bottom corner rub (right), but little else. The laminate being Clarifoil, will often have issues of lifting, but this very little indeed with just a very thin sliver down the spine edge that shows little. Still very fresh, clear and shiny with any of the very few creases being small to tiny, light and faint. Any dulling, friction rubs or record impression very light and faint indeed with only traces seen under light. A lovely olde graphic too, this front will not be seen too much better than this easily.

Cover Back: The unprotected back has light traces of grubbiness but few will have a great deal less. Lovely artwork too of the ‘Witch of the Westmorelands by Joni Turner as seen in close-up. A few light marks again seen critically under light but the lack of creasing and more especially ringwear makes this an attractive back that will rarely escape more significant wear.

Top Edge: Minimal traces of any wear.

Bottom Edge: Just rubbing near the corners.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Minor thumb burr traces near the centre with any thickening very light. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with a little mildish compression in places. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate.

Corners: A scuff on the bottom right but any other tip rubbing is very light indeed and being so pale, showing little. All retain very fine shape or better.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this quite fragile early 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a coded 1972 Decca polylined inner that has aged little. Mild hints of glue darkening on the seams with minimal discolour to the paper itiself. A few light creases with two near immaculate window circles and ultra clear lining that is remains almost crinkle-free. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: (or very close to), a super visual copy that is clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with just a few mainly light surface marks. One tiny mark on the final song omits around half a dozen light, dull clicks. This more folk material will mean some quieter passages, so a few minor light surface sounds are very difficult to avoid totally, but little spoilt this wonderful album for me. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This elusive folk-period Dickson album plays up to it’s high visual grading and most all exceeds it with little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops were noted. I have mentioned the six clicks on the final song, and there is the odd sporadic light click or two elsewhere. This genre is more delicate, so absolute silence from a 40-year-old record is a big ask, but this well-pressed and tough Decca record gave a very fine account of itself. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been mainly well stored and handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Very little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – early Barbara Dickson is prized amonst folk collectors and after hearing this, it is no surprise to hear why. Not quite for the highly discerning collector but this splendid copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended to many, if not most.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. When larger boxes are used, the thick record and stiffener ‘sandwich’ is then thickly embedded into bubble-wrap to bulk out the record inside the box to centre the item inside to reduce the risk of damage still further. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
