Label Conditions: Both look fantastic: very clean, fresh and attractive with only a small few light spindle marks. Very difficult to find any Test Pressing in this condition.

Brief Info: The third BJH album and now getting more and more advanced and intricate with beautiful use of orchestra. This is probably my favourite album – a close call with ‘Once Again’ – I have seldom seen a more attractive copy. The material on this album is magnificent: it includes their live favourite ‘Medicine Man’ and concludes with the sublime ‘After the Day’ – everything inbetween is equally delectable with wonderful use of strings and orchestration, a trademark of the early BJH sound. What an absolute joy to see this cover in amazing condition – barely any rubbing and devoid ringwear. A difficult album with quiet passages, but this brilliant Test Pressing offers probably the finest sound I have ever heard. A fantastic all-round copy, a top-quality German Test Pressing and equally impressive cover. I hope my pictures do this full justice, and without doubt, this is a rare opportunity to own this landmark album in such strong condition.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and probably undergraded as such. An unlaminated gatefold with smooth surfaces that have a lovely sheen. This version made with soft card and clearly prone to wear. Printed and made in Germany, includes the ‘Muster zu Ihrer Information’ (Pattern for your information) printed lined inner sleeve.

Cover Front, Back & Inside: This is a lovely cover that is rarely seen as such no matter where it was manufactured. A few tiny fine edge hairline creases and only the merest hint of rim dulling on the back, any surface marks very fine and faint. Any Test Pressing including a cover I deem a bonus, one in this condition is better still.

Top Edges: Straight, flat with any rub traces tiny and light.

Bottom Edges: Similar again with a hint more rubbing, but still very little on two black storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely any hint of wear or thickening, all guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: Again in splendid condition: solid, straight with no compression and folded square, so the edges meet up well and close to parallel. A gentle tilt to left means the front is not flush to the back on the right edge. As seen, hardly any hint or rubbing to the surface or folds, the text all close to perfect.

Corners: All corners again are neat with excellent shape retained with any tip rubbing tiny with no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: A cover of beauty and rarely will this be seen quite like this again, especially with a Test Pressing example. Clearly well-stored and hardly handled, this should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): the original Test Pressing inner sleeve is as fine as the rest of the set. A one-window lined inner that is clean, fresh with no edge splits or noteworthy creasing. Text on both sides as described further up, also ‘Barclay James Harvest BJH’ written in pen on the window side.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): with any of the very few surface traces ultra fine and faint. A superb visual copy that is very clean with brilliant shine and solidly pressed. A copy played little and then stored, Test Pressings are rarely seen like this. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This superb album plays up to and above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Finding a copy that will play better will prove beyond difficult. German records are amongst the finest around, this is no exception. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound with no tracking issues*. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult album that does have some quiet passages, none more so than ‘The Poet’. The odd tick or crackle trace nigh-on impossible to avoid, but barely anything here. Few copies will match or outperform this I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly, all evidence suggests hardly at all, and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find better and is strongly recommended. A finer example from anywhere will prove immensely difficult to find, this a joy to view and hold.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. When larger boxes are used, the thick record and stiffener ‘sandwich’ is then thickly embedded into bubble-wrap to bulk out the record inside the box to centre the item inside to reduce the risk of damage still further. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
