BARNEY WILLEN - MOSHI 2xLP (SARAVAH) VG+/VG+/VG+
An extraordinary exploratory gem of an album, this 1972 outing from French sax player Wilen treads a similar cross-cultural path to what Embryo would do a decade later with their Reise 2xLP and also sounds similar to what Sweden's Archimedes Badkar were doing on their debut. For this double LP, Wilen travelled to Africa to record and make field recordings that were then jammed over in ways that are both raging and elsewhere, accomplished with pinprick delicacy. Wilen might have been a former Art Blakey sideman but his boundaries were blown circa '68 and thereafter, he began doing things like incorporating musique concrete with free jazz and making albums with names like Dear Prof. Leary by Barney Wilen and His Amazing Free Rock band. But this 1972 double LP tops all of those readily.
The cover is VG+ for a handful of small reasons: there is a 3" scrape on the front cover, a tiny and barely noticeable 1/2"
tear on the back cover next to the track title "El Hadji", there is a faint discoloration on the top right corner of the front and the inner gatefold has a bit of age speckling. See pics for all of these. LP 1 is VG+ because of a small bit of light surface at the start of side A and because there is unfortunately a single skip on side B. LP 2 plays EX throughout but is graded VG+ because of a few marks on side B that are completely inaudible.
