Description
A rare transcription of the radio feature "A Canterbury Tale". This appears to be an abridged or edited version of the 1944 film produced by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. The BBC presenter Leslie Mitchell narrates at the start and end, and I believe the content was arranged from the film by Silvia Goodall. This radio feature appears to have been aired by the home service on the 9th of October 1945, but I can find no other evidence of it than that (or indeed of the record). So a rare and probably lost broadcast version of this important film.
The label says it was produced by the "Archers", and confusingly also produced as a radio feature by "Towers of London" (I assume the former was responsible for the film version).
I have played these records and there are sections which are identical to the film...though obviously without credits I can't be sure this is from the film soundtrack with a new arrangement and introduction/end section for the radio. Only three sides are recorded with the feature.
The records have some grime or fungus near the central parts, and both discs could do with a clean, but I found the record played well without notable audio defects (i.e., abnormal scratches/clicks ect).
A rare thing.
