Description
Original 1968 LP from the BEAD GAME, “Welcome” on the CANADIAN Avco Embassy label. One of the classiest and most impressive album covers of the 60’s – sure to make a statement when you casually leave it out on the coffee table next time the boys from the country club stop over. Inside, it’s an album that’s a bit too heavy for psychedelia and a bit too early for progressive rock. It’s not psychedelia, because the Bead Game’s concept of altering your mind would be to pummel your skull with a 20-inch mallet. And it’s not really prog rock either, because despite the long song lengths, there’s no long keyboard solos or lyrics about the Fountain of Salmacis or Siberian Khatru, whatever those are. Although I have to admit, they really DO sound like early Genesis on “Mora”, an intricate piece of dramatic music (prog) that ends in a wash of electric feedback (psych). The 8-minute “Slipping” sounds like an outtake from Procol Harum’s “Home” LP, with its heavy organ sound and a big huge “Repent Walpurgis” extended guitar coda that sounds like it’s the most important thing on the planet, even if it’s not. The brilliant “Wax Circus” sounds as good as anything off Steppenwolf’s debut album, with sweeping Hammond and dual guitar attack. It chugs along nicely for 3 and a half minutes, then kicks into turbo with a blistering wah wah solo, as the tempo furiously accelerates to double speed, spurred on by the sudden adrenaline rush. The Bead Game flirt with rural rock on “Country Girls”, who they like, and funky jam rock on “Amos and Andy”, with some killer slashing guitar work, but they can’t commit to either psych or prog when the lone drum solo on the album peters out after only 30 seconds. You’re not gonna impress Ginger Baker that way, kids. And so, you end up kinda filing this thing under the generic label “ROCK”, pure and simple, because it’s a no-frills sweaty blue collar brand of music. In a country club sleeve. Original stereo Canadian pressing on the Avco Embassy label. Cover’s in VG++ shape with some slight discoloration on the back cover. Vinyl looks clean and shiny with only very faint marks, but plays VG+ with surface crackle and occasional pops, thanks to a label not known for great pressings.
