This auction is for a very rare and highly collectible 3rd press copy of the Beatles debut LP 'Please Please Me', on the Parlophone label.

This is the very rare '3rd Press' of Please Please Me that omits the 'Recording First Publshed 1963' print on the label. These were only around for a very short time before this print was added, making these in themselves very difficult to find. Not only this, but this copy is housed in its original 'Gold' PPM sleeve. These sleeves were the very first to be manufactured and came with the very first Gold label copies, but the remaining stock were used for these initial Yellow label copies. The 'Gold' sleeves are easy to spot as the 'Angus McBean' photo credit is aligned to the far right of the word 'Songs'. The vast majority of sleeves have this credit more to the left in line with the G.

Not only that, but this also has a Factory Sample sticker on the side 1 label! Now, I've heard two stories as to what the Factory Sample sticker was used for. The first was that the sticker was used by factories when employees wanted to buy a copy direct using their discount. The sticker was stuck onto the label so that the worker couldn't then go out and re-sell it at full price. The second story is that after the promotional copies were run and the normal stock labels were loaded into the pressing machines, copies were occasionally taken from the production line, issued a Factory Sample sticker and then sent for quality control.

Whatever the reason, Factory Sample stickered copies of Beatles albums are incredibly hard to find and only amount to a tiny percentage of overall copies that were manufactured. To find on one such a hard to find transition copy of Please Please Me is almost unknown! In fact, Popsike only has one single listing for a 3rd press FS, and that sold in 2012!

All in all this makes for a very rare and highly collectible copy of this legendary LP!!

The Cover : VG-

The cover is holding up okay but is showing its age. Remember, these sleeves are over 53 years old now, and these early sleeves bore the brunt of Beatlemania. Usually they turn up pretty trashed but, all things considered, this one is looking pretty good! The front is clean with just a little creaming along the top and with some light laminate rubbing and disc impression. There's some little creases in the laminate and a few knocks around the edges. The corners are rounded a little. Top and bottom seams are holding with no splits and just a few little patches of wear - some through to the paper underneath. Spine is intact with no splits or tears and is fully legible. The back cover has creamed a little but has no writing or any serious staining. There's a mark that looks like something pointy has been dragged over it (you can see this in the photo above) and the overflaps are holding, although some areas have torn away or peeled back. Again, you can see this in the photo above. Overall, though, like I said, this is a nice example of this cover. The 'Gold' sleeves on their own are very collectible!   Inner Sleeve: G+
The original tissue paper lined inner sleeve is included (and not the later plastic lined inner). It has a lot of creases as you can see in the photod above, and there's a small tear one one side of the opening that's about 2 inches long, and there's a small split in the middle at the bottom that's about 2 inches long.   Disc (Visually Graded Only!!) : VG

The playing surface has a nice shine to it and has a fair amount of light, faint scuffmarks along with a few slightly heavier looking scuffs. Nothing too serious, however, and looks like it would play back without too much crackle or anything. Looking nice!
.

Labels : VG+

The labels are clean with clear, silver text. There's a fair amount of light spindlewear that has caused some whitening around the centrehole. The Factory Sample sticker is still stuck tightly.
