THIS IS A GREAT CHANCE TO PURCHASE A GENUINE BUTCHER ALBUM, AT A GREAT PRICE ! Although current book value list top quality 3rd state butcher covers conservatively at somewhere between $1000 and $2500, genuine Butcher album packages have frequently and recently sold in our past auctions, Beatles conventions and record shows for over $2000.00. Please review all condition issues that are specifically detailed below prior to bidding. We feel that you'll agree that this is a steal for the price considering the reserve price on this item ! PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY AND CONTACT US FOR QUESTIONS BEFORE BIDDING IF YOU ARE NOT SURE OF THE DESCRIPTION.

History and Terminology Of The Butcher Cover

For those who don't know, this is the famous album that was banned by Capitol records prior to release in 1966 and then covered over with the more familiar trunk cover. The butcher scene was deemed too gruesome for the general public. As a result, Capitol destroyed a great quantity of these but eventually found it more economical to cover the offending jacket with the more familiar trunk cover.

For terminology sake: 1st state: is a copy that was never covered over with a trunk cover. They are extremely rare and were practically never sold in stores and only used as promos for radio and sales managers. 2nd state: is a butcher cover with the trunk cover pasted over. 3rd state: Is a 2nd state butcher cover that has had its trunk cover(hopefully professionally) removed.

Our reserves are the most reasonable on Ebay ! First state butchers have sold for as much as $40,000! You can own a real 3rd state butcher for a tiny fraction of that cost. These are quickly being snatched up by collectors as fast as they appear.

As you can see from the photo , this is a truly gorgeous example of this rare treasure.

SPECIFIC CONDITION OF THIS ITEM IS AS FOLLOWS(Please keep in mind that we are extremely strict in grading !!): The front cover, as you can see from the photos, is as the title states, awesome. This would look good on any wall.  Factory glue lines and professional touch is practically non existent. No tears to the butcher slick !!! We are one of the only in house butcher peelers on Ebay and what most sellers won't disclose is what if any(even minute undetectable) touch up has been done to a cover. Many times it is because they have no clue because they didn't peel it and sent it out to have this done. Any pro peeler out there that claims that they peel butchers every time without even minute occasional touch up sometimes is simply not being truthful. We define a "perfect peel as one where there isn't even the slightest teenie pinpoint issue to the butcher slick. This simply doesn't happen every day to every butcher especially depending on the 2nd state being peeled. We would put this particular peel up against just about anything out there. We don't overgrade our items. If there is anything, even the most minor of problems, with a butcher jacket such as a seam crack, it doesn't qualify for a NM grade in our opinion, so this would probably come in at a VG+ grading. We don't generally grade butcher covers as there are two things to grade, the quality of the peel and the overall condition of the jacket. Given that this is framed, any conditon issues concerning the jacket are fairly irrelevant. The peel is awesome on this, plain and simple. So consider the peel quality when considering the grading. Our last framed stereo butcher, which was slightly damaged by the previous owners attempted peel, sold through Buy It Now for just under $700 and the buyer was thrilled with it. This piece has no such damage If you were to take this to a frame shop and have it archivally framed it would most likely cost $200.00 or more just to frame this with the highest quality acid free rag mat, quality steel framing and UV protective acrylic front. You will be proud to display this piece! The reserve with the framing is well below book value for a piece that displays with this quality.

As far as the jacket goes, both the top, bottom seam and spine are mostly intact with some average age cracking here and there. This is not to mean that the album is split in half ! Spine writing is there and ledgible. The only issue of concern is that a previous owner neatly glued the seam cracks and used whiteout on the top and bottom seams, but this doesn't really mean much as it is not visible in the frame whatsoever. Even out of the frame, this is no biggie! Nothing else too out of the ordinary. The back is decent and fairly clean with some overall tanning/aging. Given some of the very minor condition issues, we decided to archivally frame this. Given that this is framed, any of these issues area NON ISSUE ! This is not a cheapo $9.99 frame that you often see but a 100% archival frame with OP-3 Grade UV protective acrylic window that blocks 98% of harmful UV rays and a bevel cut crescent rag mat of the highest quality. This framing system is designed so that the items may be easily removed from the frame should the owner wish to do so at any point in time. The butcher cover and trunk slick is additionally protected in thick archival quality mylar sleeves. This framed package presents as well as a top quality mono butcher costing much more. Keep in mind that we only use archival materials with our investment grade butcher covers. Given the fact that this is all perfomed in house, the savings can be passed on to you. Please examine photos and ask questions before bidding as this is being sold in as is condition. We've seriously adjusted the price accordingly on this one to make it one of the most affordable framed mono butcher covers with the removed trunk slick. To tell the truth, this butcher framed looks as good as any other mono butcher out there and certainly better than anything you will find in this price range. Recently, even mono butcher covers of this quality without framing have closed at final auction prices that exceed 1k.

We have slashed the reserve and the Buy It Now well price below 1/2 the Warman's 2005 Beatles Price Guide value of a top quality condition price making this an excellent value.Auction includes mono record in at least VG condition with the original olive Capitol inner sleeve(yes, butcher covers were also issued with the olive colored sleeve in addition to the orange sleeve . The removed trunk slick presents well and is mounted and framed with some winor wrinkling and repair . PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT WE ARE BRUTALLY HONEST IN GRADING AND THE REAL PERSPECTIVE OF THIS PIECE IS HOW IT APPEARS IN THE PHOTOS.

Our grading system is as follows:

Mint-doesn't exist ! Just like baseball cards fresh from the pack, record sleeves have imperfections right off the factory line. We see this term used frequently but don't personally believe in it. In regard to butcher covers, the term "perfect peel" should only be applied (in our opinion) to a cover with absolutely no flaws whatsoever to the butcher cover from the peeling process. This term is also thrown around freely but given the complexities of 40+ year old paper and glue "perfect peels" just don't happen every day. Any professional peeler worth their salt will tell you that absolutely 100% perfect peels don't occur every time. Mint records also don't really exist in the real world, even if they are taken out of sealed jackets.

Near Mint :Jacket must be free of all major flaws such as writing, tears, stains, ringwear etc. Should appear as new.White color should be snowy and free of tanning. Near mint records should appear and play as new with no issues and full gloss.

VG+ : This cover may exhibit a few minor flaws such as slight wear, aging, beginning seam crack or spine wear but nothing too serious like writing or major tears or stains on the cover. Records can a exhibit a few minor marks and light sleeve scratches but nothing that should disturb the enjoyment of the record.

VG : Exhibits noticeably more wear than VG+. Average ring wear , etc. Records will exhibit more scratches and some noise may be evident in play although record should be free of any skips.

G  :  This is something that you only want as a filler copy. It will exhibit many isues at once such as seam splits, writing on the jacket, ringwear or stains. Record will have noticeable crackling and tics but should play through.

Poor, Fair : One step away from the garbage can and unless it's a really, really rare piece.... stay away. This jacket will be fairly trashed with full seam splits, major wear, stains etc. Record will have major wear, scratching and may not play through.

This package exceeds what you commonly see in this price range and is a great opportunity for someone who has been looking and looking for a keeper copy of this legendary album in mono that will only increase in value as these are snatched up.Overall this is a really nice piece and something that you will treasure for many years to come !
